The color convergence seems to be not working at the end of the magic focus the number 3 comes up. whats wrong?

Convergence problems are almost always traced back to the IC chips (also commonly referred to guns). You can order a new board (very pricey) or if you are pretty good with a soldering iron, it's possible to remove the IC's (if you choose to do it yourself, best to replace all 3 IC' s at once). The guns are usually in the $10-20 range apiece whereas the convergence board can run in the $300 range.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Picture movement and lines

What you most likely have is a convergence problem. The convergence circuitry is used to align your colors. What you describe sounds like that circuit has failed. Google “Hitachi convergence repair” and you’ll find many sites that will educate you on how to repair and where to get the parts needed for your Hitachi PTV.

This is a very common failure on Projection sets. Its called a convergence problem.

You may have one or more of the following symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
No Audio / No Video - Makes Chirping Sounds

If the convergence is off more than 1/2 inch or so you can't adjust. you have a failure of hardware. most likely the output IC. This set has 2 outputs for convergence. Each output contains 3 circuits, Six circuits altogether 2 red ,2 blue and 2 green. The normal customer adjustment will only alow adjustment of blue and red. They should be converged onto the green. There is a much more complex adjustment in the service mode for Geometry and convergence. These adjustments are only needed when you replace a failed componnent like the output ic. These ICs have been upgraded several times since the production of this set. The latest and most powerfull version is STK394-160. If feel up to it I suggest changing both outputs and the corresponding output resistors. Then do a complete geometry and convergence alignment.

HITACHI 53SBX59B, projection lights don't line up.

It sounds like bad solder connections in the convergence output circuit. It may also be an intermittant convergence output ic which will need to be replaced.

Hitachi 53sbx59b horizontal wave lines

I would check the main power supply for a bad filter cap. That could cause the wavy lines. The different colors are probably a problem with the convergence circuit. Try resoldering the convergence ICs first. If that does not resolve it replace the ICs. Also check for low valued resistors in that same circuit or pico fuses.

from you bought the tv and notice that it has that stain on the edge you should have taken it back as it was covered under warranty.now it is getting worse it will cost you to get it fix your tv has a factory defect.you will have to call the repair man to fix your tv.good luck.

The board is no longer available. It is much less to just replace the two chips and any resistors bad--give me a email or reply here and I will tell you what is involved.

Total parts cost will be under 30 dollars---usually much less.

I have fixed hundreds of these sets and own two older than yours.

I have the same type of Hitachi TV (53SBX59B) that is way out of convergence but won't converge via the Magic Focus function. Is it hard to fix the convergence unit yourself? Thx.

I have a 2003 Hitachi 53SBX59B 53-Inch UltraVision Projection TV.
The TV appears to have two issues...
First, the colour GREEN tends to dominate most of the images, blacks and greys look GREEN.
Second, as of yesterday there is what I all BLUE ghosting on the TV monitor, primarily on the top and bottom but also a little through the screen.
What do you think?
