Hi Diana - To record your outgoing message, hold down your ogm button ( outgoing message) for two seconds and it will ask you to record a message. To play back your message, just push the same button and it will play your message. If you don't like it just do it again. If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks and have a good day.

A warning I'll pass on that I just learned:
I just lost 57 special messages that I had saved for years to follow up on, and learned the hard way (if you haven't come across it yet):
From page 6 of manual:
INSTRUCTIONSFOR MOVINGTHE ANSWERER... 3. Go to the electrical outlet and unplug the power supply. DO NOT UNPLUG THE POWERJACK CONNECTED TO THE UNIT. If you do, all memory will be erased. I wasn't even moving it to another place, the jack just came a little loose while moving it around the table, and all the messages disappeared.A very poor detail in an otherwise (in my experience) well-designed machine.Manual's page 6 covers this:http://www.fixya.com/support/p129719-ge_29869ge2_digital_answering_machine/manual-13322/page-6
