The rubber band that turns the roller on the vacuum keeps breaking. I just bought a new rubber band, put it on, and it broke immediately. Can it be fixed?

The number one cause of brushes not rotating is a broken belt. If you remove the four screws holding the bottom plate, you'll see a short, wide rubber belt that goes around the roller.

If this is broken, it's easy to replace. They do break because of age and wear. One of the leading causes of breakage is when the roller gets something - a curtain cord, for example - wrapped around it. If you don't immediately shut off the vacuum & remove the cord, the belt will continue to try to turn the roller (which can't turn), and this generates a lot of heat in just a few seconds.

The number two cause of brushes not rotating is, as suggested above, something jammed & wound around the roller. It's always a good idea to turn the vacuum over periodically and clean the roller... including using scissors or a knife to snip & remove wound hairs & threads. A clean and healthy roller will help to keep your belt happy!

It sounds like your roller brush itself might be bad. Try holding the roller brush holding just the end caps with your finger tips, and spinning the roller. Does the roller spin freely? If no, this indicates that your roller brush's bearings have melted together. This is a common problem for Bissell vacuums, as they use cheaper plastic bearing caps. The roller brush is not covered under the warranty either.

When this part goes bad, this causes the belt to break almost immediately. If you tried replacing the belt, and it broke immediately, your roller brush has gone bad.

Hi thanks so much - the vacuum is an upright morphy richards model number 73360.

We kept re-alligning the band into the middle and rolling the brush round several times with our hands to make sure it wouldn't spin off. The roller that the band fits on is very wide so you just put the band in what you think looks like the middle.

It was unbelievably sensitive and had to have it "exactly perfect" to the millimetre otherwise the band would just continue to slip off. It appears to be working for now so lets see how long it lasts before the smell of burning again! Many thanks for advice.

your brush roller isn't turning unplug the vacuum and see if you can turn the brush roller and also notice if it turns freely or is it stiff,take the roller out and remove strings,carpet strands and hair.if you can pull the ends off clean the ends good and maybe add just a little drop of machine oil on the bearing on the inside the roller where the bearings are.clean the motor shaft.there is probably old burnt rubber on the motor shaft.you can use a pice of emery cloth ,clean it till you see the polished finish .but i would say your problem is in the brush roller and the motor shaft.i hope i was some help to you.can you please leave some feedback

Hi Have you got the correct belt? If its breaking then the brush end caps or something is clogged. If you can get into the floor head ensure you look at the actual brush roll to see if there is anything is clogged or trapped. Remove all matter of dust and see if that works.

the brush roller is siezing up on you.try to take the brush roller out and clean it real good .pull the ends off and clean them to things get caught up and wrapped around them and keep them from turning.before you put the new belt on clean the motor shaft .usually when a belt breaks it leaves burnt rubber on the shaft .if you don't clean it the new belt won't last long.please leave feedback.i hope i was some help to you...pete

Remove brush roller and black caps at each end of the roller. Clean and oil the bearings.they must turn freely.

I had the same problem with the belt breaking and the roller not spinning. I read about giving the roller a couple of revolutions to seat the belt, so I put another new belt on. It still didn't spin. I realized it was the end cap that was not spinning so I took off the roller and gently pried off the end cap and there was an enormous amount of thread spun around inside of the small area. I had to keep digging it out with tweezers. Quite unbelievable. I also found that when it spits out instead of sucking up, it needs to be cleaned. Check all areas, especially the part that is round that you have to twist open. (Inside, behind the foam filter and UP).

Check the brush roll ends to see if they have melted or frozen. They should turn freely, part #361869-1. Make sure the belt isn't being pinched somewhere.

I had the same problem. Broke 2 belts before I got online and noticed this site! What I found was, the roller ends were not turning freely. I had cleaned the hair (nasty) off the roller, but the ends were still not able to spin around without some force.

What I did was, removed the roller and on the 2 ends there are 2 black plastic caps which fit over the bearing, I removed the plastic caps and put a little WD-40 on the bearing, or any industrial lubricant, even new motor oil will work. After putting on the WD-40, I spun the roller end around a few times and the WD-40 lubricated the bearings and Voila! The roller end spun freely!! I put the black caps back onto the bearings on both sides, reinstalled a new belt, it's been working great since.

It saves the cost of a new roller.
