SONY CFD-S01. CD Player skips tracks. I have isolated the problem to a toothed drive wheel that drives the laser back and forth. one of the teeth has flattened. I suspect that this happened because it has been used to play some very scrached CD's, and kept trying to track them. Now it has worn out the wheel. I can see the visible damage.
Does anybody know where I can buy the part, or even identify the part number?
Is there a parts list anywhere?

Try using a laser lens cleaner. I have the Maxell Thunderon one thats on a Gold CD that you can get at best buy for like $20 or so, seems to work good here on the computer disc drives

you didn't say which "ES" model of player it is but i assume it has the KSS-240A laser pick-up, or something very similar. i've repaired so many sony cd players i've lost count and 90% of them have been down to the same fault you describe.given the age of the player the most common cause of skipping is hardened grease on the laser sled and the drive gears which causes resistance in laser movement hence the skipping. try clean as much of the old grease off the sled & drive gears as possible and relubricate. i've used a drop of light machine oil in the absence of a light grease which has made lasting repairs. but run only a small drop along the sled taking care not to drop any on the laser itself. if of course you have any light grease then i would use this but not too much. hope this helps?

The optical lens assembly is damaged at this point. the lens has burned out and the tracking/load motor seems to be faulty as well. replace the optical lens asap.

I just fixed this using Scarthhouse's solution of removing the sensor assembly, cog, and squeezing the rack (of the rack and pinion) together (I squeezed the metal bar upwards). I'm not even electronically-inclined, so I'm ecstatic that this fixed the used 300 Sony disk player I just purchased.

The CFD-S01 is designed for use with CD-R and CD-RW discs. With that in mind a few things come to mind. Are the CD-R discs you are using music or data discs? There is a difference and some CD players do not get along with data discs and won't play them well if at all. Also the burn rate used can have an effect - too fast and it won't play well. If a disc doesn't play at all it might not be finalized. A disc must be finalized on the recorder it was burned on before it is playable on any other machine.
