You cant, when you remove and replace the lamp cover the tv will come on and ask if you changed the lamp. you need to press enter on the remote (not the tv) to reset the counter. go buy a universal remote and program it to your tv then use that. make sure the remote you buy has an enter button. most should, but you never know.

I do not think failing to reset the Lamp Timer would cause the Lamp not to light. You need to get into the Factory Menu while the picture is on in order reset the Timer. I believe you have a Ballast issue either because the Power Supply is not powering the Ballast or the Ballast not Powering the Lamp. In either case, the only way to know is to have a professional to check it out and give a estimate for repair.
I hope this helps,

The lamp timer on the Hitachi projector must be reset whenever the lamp has been replaced. The "Lamp" indicator on the display will light red or the "Change the Lamp" message will display when the lamp timer needs to be reset. Hitachi recommends that the lamp timer never be reset without replacing the lamp and to always reset the timer when the lamp is replaced. The message functions of the projector will not function properly if the lamp timer is not correctly reset.
Turn the power on. Press the "Reset" button for three seconds until the "Lamp xxxx hr" message appears on the lamp timer on the bottom of the screen.
Press the "Menu" button on the remote control while the lamp timer is displayed.
Press the left arrow button. Select "0" and wait until the timer display clears.
