The TV might have set to Hotel mode. To get it out from this mode, you have to enter its service alignment mode [SAM]. Check this link to get more details about it. Yes a universal remote will work and the programing code should be listed in the manual for the remote control. Some feature an auto code search to pair the remote with the television.

The first thing I would do as its from a HOTEL is take the LG telly out of HOTEL MODE. follow the steps below, This should allow you to change the settings on the telly and store them. So when you turn the tv back on it will not revert back to the hotel Options

TV turned on. Hold down the MENU button on the remote for approx 5 seconds then type in 1105 this will take you to the LG hidden Menu.

in this menu there will be hotel mode turn this option off.

This will allow you to save your own setting without it jumping back.

YOU WILL NEED THE SPECIAL REMOTE TO DO THIS. AND I THINK SOME OF THEM HAVE ABILITY IN SERVICE MENU TO TURN OFF HOTEL MODE. OR YOU CAN TRY USING ANY PHILLIPS/MAGNAVOX REMOTE WITH THE STATUS BUTTON AND TRY THIS.
PRESS MENU-9-6-5-2-STATUS AND YOU SHOULD BE IN THE SERVICE MODE TURN OFF THE HOTEL MODE

for phillips tvs that come out of a hotel try this code with RCA universal remote. the big remote not a small remote. 319753 followed immediately by the mute button. this will pull up the tv setup menu.

I think its 1454.
