SOURCE: GE built in Fridge does not defrost and freezer ices up

Defrosters are commonly controlled by a primitive timer and this may have a 'dry' and a 'wet' (humid) climate setting that will cause the defroster to cycle generally every 12 or 24 hours.
If set wrong (by accident or on purpose), it can allow too much frost to accumulate before attempting to defrost.
This can cause a gradual buildup of ice.

Also the heating element for the freezer may have failed open so it never heats at all. The connections that need to be checked are often buried between the in- and outside walls.

The timer is probably still OK since you apparently aren't having a problem on the refrigerator side.

SOURCE: Troubleshooting defrost system failure on Amana Fridge

YES YOU GOT IT,IT'S THE BOARD BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE CHECKED OUT GOOD,BOTH FANS,HEATING ELEMENT,DEFROST THERMOSTAT,THE ONLY OTHER THING I WOULD DO IS TURN THE THERMOSTAT OFF IN THE FRIG.TO SEE IF THE COMPRESSOR AND FANS TURN OFF,WAIT 3 MINUTES AND TURN IT BACK ON, IF THAT CHECKS OUT THEN IT HAS TO BE THE DEFROST TIMER,LET ME KNOW-MIKE

SOURCE: Defrost Heater Resistance Range

21.3 ohms is just fine for a defrost heater. this heater is low wattage since it is an adaptive defrost. you could have problem with temperature sensor since you have replaced the board already.

tnx for using fixya,

Freezer only gets down to around 18 degrees but fridge is fine. No frost on the freezer evaporator fan is running

Modern consumer refrigerators only have coils in the freezer. In the lower back of the freezer there is a small fan and possible a damper (flap that opens/closes) to push cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator. Given that the freezer is 18 deg, it's probably cold enough to keep the fridge area at typically 34 deg.
So the cooling system (compressor, coils, thermostat) are not working properly to keep the freezer at, typically 0 deg. Possible causes: partial loss of refrigerant gas, icing around evaporator coils (in freezer), compressor failing, dust clogging condenser coils (under fridge), condenser fan clogged or broken (under fridge), thermostat failure.
I'd start with condenser. Remove the slotted trim at the bottom front and look in with a flashlight. Are the coils clean? Pull out the fridge and remove the lower back cover (usually cardboard). You can now see the coils and fan. Clean and blow them out.
If it's icing, it probably means freezer door not closing tight. If auto-defrost not working properly it would probably get worse over the period of a few days so not likely.

Srl629ev refrigerator

It is likely to be either the circulation fan in the freezer or the defrost element. The cold air is blown from the freezer into the fridge if the fan doesn't work then no cold in fridge.Otherwise it could be a defrost problem, if the element doesn't work the rear fills up with ice and the air cant flow. Both are behind the rear panel of the freezer

The fridge portion is not staying cold. The freezer is working fine.

The air damper(that allows air to go to the freezer to frig side) is possibly plugged with frost. or if frost on back panel is visible then the unit is not defrosting properly, three possible failues or combnations 1.defrst heater 2.defrost timer 3.bi-metal defrost thermostat. find which is failed but the fi frost is on the back panel the the quickest tempory fix is this remove all items from the freezer and thaw/defrost the evap coil then reassemble the freezer compartment

Freezer works fine but fridge has lost its temperature.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp

..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Your refrigerator does not have a simple defrost timer, it has a expensive defrost board. The replacement part number 8201659 it may be found possibly by a group of different company's.
