Turn it off,let the drive handle go,pull mower backwards.does it lock the back wheels?if you push it forward, can you hear a clicking noise from the wheels?you should do.lift mower, spin back wheel, should either lock,or click, depending which way you spin it.they have spring loaded pawls that drive the wheel.usually easy to fix.usually dirt,or too much grease.take wheels off, have a look

Why won't my 22 in. Kohler Low Wheel Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower self propel anymore?

i would guess that the belt is'nt tight enough when engaged. when you press the drive bar on the handle it should make the belt really tight if not it will need replaced. sometimes the gears in the wheels will mess up. there are videos on you tube that describe that and also the belt.

My self propelled isn't working

Look under the cover and check the belt. It may be broken or loose. Might also have some debris in it. You can tighten a loose belt a little.

I have a 22 inch self propelled recycler that will idle for hours, but as soon as you engage the self propel and start mowing it stops after 5 minutes.

This sounds like fuel starvation. This is usually caused by debris in the fuel float bowl or a dirty fuel filter (if used). Remove the fuel float bowl and clean out the debris. With the bowl removed use a spray paint can lid as a catch pan and check fuel flow. With the float down it should fill the spray paint can lid in about 10 seconds. If you do not have this much fuel flow you need to inspect the tank outlet port, fuel lines and filter (if used).
The 20029 & 20099 models came with either a Briggs & Stratton or Kohler Courage XT7 engine. I need to know what engine you have to provide any diagrams on what to check or clean. A n engine model number would be even better. (Please!) Since the post is labeled with the 20099 model I will cite that as a reference. This SERVICE manual should help you with repairs:
http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp2601_308.pdf

See page 27 of the manual for fuel filter location. (Optional if used) AN exploded view is on page 31.

If you have the primer bulb model see page 24 and note the ondition of the primer bulb and primer bulb hose. Any hole in the primer bulb or cracks in the primer bulb hose can also cause this symptom.

If you have the Briggs and Stratton engine (Model 20029) I need the engine number to get you the correct manual data please. Otherwise...this should help you resolve the problem.

Troybilt 6.5 -self propell belt came off..how do i put it back on

I assume the front wheels are the drive wheels. There is a cover over the belt, on top you'll see a plastic cover, if it drives from the bottom you'll have a metal cover under the deck. Eigther way remove that cover which ever one it is. This will expose drive and give you acess. They tend to collect alot of debri and rust clean before remounting or repacing belt.

My troy built 210 6.75 hp mower self propelled mower doesnt pull

remove the front black plastic plate that is stamped self propelled and replace the wheel drive belt that attaches the engine pulley (above blade) to the transmission pulley (found under the cover). When you buy the belts, pick up two or three as I seem to go through a couple per season. Hopes this helps

Self-propelled feature does not work at all! Any suggestions?

You might have a broken belt to the self propelled or a broken spring or whatever engages the self propel. Take off the cover and see if anything is broken or missing. Have someone engage the self propel while you are watching and see what is going on.

6.5 toro walk behind self propell b&s engine. self propel does not work

Try adjusting your self propel cable. A slight extension of the cable (1/4 inch) will double speed, so do a little at a time. Take the back guard off and clean debris 2 or 3 screws and it is just a cover so nothing will pop out unless that is your real problem. You should have grease fittings behind rear wheels so squirt 2 times with grease gun in each wheel and 1 squirt every 3rd mow.

Troy bilt mower self propelled 21". Belt has come off

Take the three screws out of the belt cover. One screw in behind each back wheel. The other is under the mower near the shaft to blade. Remove the tension spring off the transmission. Then remove blade and the cover comes off. You then can put the belt back on. Sounds like fun don't it!

Toro self propelled 22 inch recycler lawn mower start pull cord is "stuck"

Casey,

My son just bought a new Toro self propelled 22" recycler and has had problems on two different occasions. The mower just bogs down to a stop and when he tried to pull the starter cord, it was very VERY difficult to pull. At first I thought the engine had seized up for some reason (no oil?), but we found the problem.

First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug (to avoid the engine starting); tip the mower on its side and check very carefully the pulley and transmission belt. In his case, a piece of wood had gotten stuck between the belt and the pulley. Removing it fixed the problem (now he mows a little higher so as not to get so close to any debris). (We did have one further problem after that - the engine would not start - not even fire. After pulling and pulling, checking for gas, and checking that the air filter was cleean, we decided to check if the cylinder was flooded - we removed the spark plug, wiped and dried if off, and replaced it. It started right away.)

This belt 'n pulley arrangement isn't the best idea, if you ask me.

Good luck.
