Lens probably does not retract because of debris or a misaligned gear box. The lens can in about 50% of the cases be repaired without having to replace it. Try to return to manufacturer first. If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that fix them such as camera lens repairs. If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

Lens error restart

Normally just recharging / replacing the camera battery will allow the lens to retract. If not. Switch on the camera and GENTLY apply pressure to the lens at the same time. If not, im afraid it's off to the camera repair shop.

Canon g11 telephoto lens vignette

You have to zoom the camera lens out for that lens to work.

Lens is not retracting. Display shows lens error, restart camera. But the same appears after restarting

Your lens does sound like it needs to be replaced, but I would recommend dealing directly with Canon. If your camera is still in warranty they may do the repair for free, if not they will replace the lens for a flat rate charge of $159. It's a little expensive, but it will be done right, using a brand new lens.

Lens error.....restart camera. Tried over and over again. Nothing works. HELP!

Went to the beach yesterday, by the end of the night my camera gave me this error: "lens error, restart camera". The lens would no longer come out.

I figured sand got stuck within the lens, so I did the following:

1. Turn camera up-side-down (with lens facing down)
2. Gently tap the sides of the camera (to loosen particles in lens)
3. Turn camera on
4. The lens will eventually come out
5. Gently tap the sides of the lens
6. Turn camera off (continue tapping side of lens as it retracts)

I turned the camera on and off a couple of times to ensure I removed all sand particles from the camera.

Now the camera works...thank god....

thanks.

How do you restart the Canon G9 camera?

There is not way to reset it if you get “lens error”. The lens stuck, you need to send it for repair.

PowerShot SD630 lens stuck out, says lens error, restart camera

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

"Lens Error, Restart Camera" Lens stuck open, completely disfunctional! /sadface :(

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
