How do i turn on wireless on acer aspire 4720z ?
The far left button below the start button (middle, top) is the wireless button. It seems this button is finicky and the led doesn t always light. Open the control panel and access the Windows Mobility Center at the bottom. The wireless feature enable button will not be accessible if the wireless button is not activated. While on this screen press the far left button that has a dish network symbol and keep pressing it over and over until the button on the mobility center panel is enabled. This is the only clue you will have on whether the button is on or off.

For your OS or for your BIOS on the motherboard?
If you have XP Home...any version...start the laptop immediatly hitting the F8 key. That will give you a window with options for booting the system. At the top of the list you will see a option called "Safe Mode". choose that option and let the machine boot to the user login. Either choose the Administrator logo if shown, or type in the word "administrator" in the user name field and then click enter. It should let you log in without a password if it hasn't been changed. When your laptop fully loads, go to control panel and find the users icon and click on that. Choose the user who's password you want to change and change it. It will not ask for the Old password.
On the BIOS, you'll have to unplug the battery, abbout the size of a US nickle. once you unplg it, leave it that way for about 20 minutes. Make sure you do not have the Laptop Battery in it's bay, as this will keep power to the motherboard and will not allow any BIOS memory to drain from the IC chip. Once the BIOS has dropped it's charge, the BIOS will be reset to factory settings. You'll then need to get back into the BIOS ant set the clock to the right time and date.
On your OS password...there are some tools out there to use that use a pre-programmed floppy and your original OS installation CD to reset the Administrator's password. They normally require you to know what the Admin name is. Any IT in his right mind with have renamed the Admin user name and installed a password.
On the XP home versions, if you try my suggestion, and are not able to access the Admin account, most likely a knowledgeable user added a password to that account...because by default...Home always installs the Admin without a password...though access to that account is only by using the Safe Mode boot method.

Check that you have entered the wireless security key onto the laptop, may be this that is not allowing connection.
