TV Turns Off On Its Own

I have a 65 inch Sony Rear Projection TV that was manufactured in 2002. The TV has been great for 8 years, but a couple days ago it started to shut off on its own. At first we thought we touched the remote or something, but figured out that nobody is touching any buttons and it just shuts off for no reason. For two days it was fine to turn it back on and it would run for hours, but this morning, it shut off after being on for a few minutes and now it won't come back on. There is a small standby light on the TV that is flashing once it shuts off and when you hit the button to turn it back on, it tries to come on and makes the noise like it is going to, but shuts right back off before producing a picture. I have unplugged it from the wall, but it made no difference. Any suggestion what this could be?

    Hi,
Thanks so much for offering to help me out with this TV. First, I gave you the wrong serial number and it is actually a 57-inch Sony. The number is KP-57WS500. I counted the flashes and there are 6 of them between pause to pause. Could you let me know what is wrong and how I can possibly fix it. Thanks.

I found in the owner's manual what the flashing 6 times means, but that still doesn't tell me how to fix it. Do I need to replace the boards or is there some other way. Also, how do I know which board. There are 3 sets of A/B boards, one with each bulb. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Standby light flashing is error sign and shows tv got problem some where in its circuit boards.
You will notice 3 seconds long pause between red standby light flashing so count pause to pause and post how many times it flashing to diagnose problem of tv.
Thanks.

Mitsubishi 65

My TV did the same thing for a couple of years. It is the precursor to the capasitor going out on the DM board. The good thing is that the capacitors only cost around 4 dollars if you can soldier them yourself.

52 inch sony rear projection t.v.

Whining sound most likely is a bad flyback transformer. You are probally looking at a 350-450 bill depending on the repair shop. If your picture was "great" go for it. If the tv has a lot of wear let it go. Nothing the repair shop does to fix your problem will make your picture better than it was before it went out. Somthing to contemplate.
