Question about HP Compaq 8510p Notebook
Sounds like either your backlight bulb has failed or the inverter that powers the bulb has failed or a connection has come loose from the inverter to the LCD panel. Unless the laptop was "Jarred" or dropped, I doubt the bulb has burned out....most likely if no damage occued, the inverter has failed or there is a loose connection with the inverter.

As has already been stated, it may just be a loose connection to the Inverter, or the Inverter may have failed.
The LCD screen cannot give off enough light by itself, therefore a Backlight Bulb is also used.
The Inverter provides power for the Backlight Bulb.
With the HP Compaq 8510P, the Inverter circuit board is located inside the LCD display panel, and right below the LCD screen itself.
[The terms used here, Inverter, Inverter board, and Inverter circuit board are relate to the same component]
Viewing the LCD monitor screen, you will note there is a 'frame' around it in the front. Resembles a picture frame.
This is the Bezel.
Essentially the Bezel just pops off.
(There is a CORRECT procedure, Do Not attempt it until you have read further!)
The Inverter circuit board is right behind it at the bottom left.
An Inverter board for this laptop ranges around $20.
One example of a place that sells the Inverter. (Not an advertisement for the website)
How to replace the Inverter,
Step 6 gives a close-up look at the Inverter circuit board, and the connections to it.
Step 7 shows the Inverter circuit board removed.
Might just be a loose connection.
See where the cables, (Wires) plug in on each end of the Inverter?
They can come loose.
Especially the one on the Left.
This is the power cable TO the Inverter.
Repeated opening, and closing of the laptop, can cause this cable connection to come loose.
