I also have Windows Vista. My microphone was working initially but now has stopped and it seems that the computer will not recognise it. The last time it was working a window came up upon connecting the microphone requesting me to click the type of input device I was connecting. At the same time I also clicked the box at the bottom of the window so that the message would not be shown again. I think this may be the problem but I do not have a clue how to fix it.

This usually just gets reinstalled whenever you restart your computer be it Vista or XP. In your case, the drivers for the Microphone probably got deleted. The Microphone driver comes in the package together with the sound card. You'll have to re-install the whole sound card driver to have it start working again. You can do this from the Device Manager. After doing this, the microphone together with the whole sound card drivers should start working again.

In case your settings change involved installing a new driver try rolling it back. If your pc was upgraded from xp to vista the drivers for the sound card may need to be updated.

Have you downloaded/installed the specific drivers for the microphones and the motherboard? Although you have turned on the options within XP, there are often proprietary drivers that have to be installed and configured for the system to recognize the microphone.
Check the ASUS cdrom that came with your board and see if there aren't drivers for the board you will need to install.

The chipset (nForce 500) is soldered on the motherboard, it can't be changed. The problems you encountered were probably caused by bad drivers. If you choose to reinstall Vista don't use the driver's disk that came with the pc, get the latest ones from here

But if you have the money you should buy Windows 7 , it's much better than Vista.
