So here is my the deal...I purchased this Amana Range and have had it serviced once. The repair man explained there is a known problem with the hinges that close the door. What happens is the oven door does does not fully close and then the hot oven air rises and basically cooks the control pad which is directly above the door.
I have had the hindges replaced once as well as the control pad. My warranty just ended and this problem has reared its ugly head again. The hinges and control panel are again causing problems. In fact, the heat gets pretty intense that it begins to breakdown the plastic control panel shield which now has a hole in it.
I just got a notification on the Asure Extended Service (they are absolutely ****!) If there is a pre-existing condition then they will make you fix it first and then will service the unit. Well - what about the last time you serviced it? Shouldnt that last for at least a year? NOT!!!
PS - when you call for an extended service - NEVER tell them something is wrong. Say everything is fine and then in 60 days give them the low down and have the whole thing overhauled. Friggin insurance companies and products that arent worth a damn.
Next step is to call Amana or Maytag customer care and get prepared for another run-around.
Signed,
PO'd
I have the same problem with faulty hinges creating heat that fries the control panel on my Amana range. I checked with the Amana-authorized repair guy and he estimated that a repair would cost about $475 in parts and labor. So here's what I did:
I think this is an excellent compromise solution as the parts probably cost Amana very little but with the mark-up would cost me a lot. The key here though is BEING VERY KIND TO THE REP. They are trained to be inflexible. If that is going to push your buttons, you might want to ask someone else to make the call for you.
I had the same issue. I determined after the first technician came out what was going on. The door is heavy and when it opens it bends the interior door panel convexly. Meaning it can’t create a seal and heat escapes the front and the front stainless panel gets really hot. I had purchased the extended warranty on this unit but didn’t know that every time I had a tech come out and fix it that service call was deducted from the retail value of the unit eventually rendering it worthless. So when I finally got so mad after the 4th tech came out I called and said I wanted a new unit. It was only 18 months old and had cost me 1200. They told me they couldn’t come out anymore because I had burned through the value of the unit and so that was it. ARE YOU KIDDING?
After several go arounds they finally gave me full credit towards another unit. I chose a Kitchen Aid and love it! Good luck and I hope no one gets burned on it. I had to keep my three kids out of the kitchen every time I baked because I was afraid of them scalding themselves on it. FYI there are also bad reviews on epinions.com about this very unit. People who have the same problem. Amana just needs to recall it for those who write in and complain. I was told by Amana that I was the first to say something about the faulty hinges.
Same problem. Of course, Amana/Wirlpool has never heard of the problem before - ya right. Seems like if someone gets a 3rd degree burn or the house burns down Amana/Wirlpool could be in for a major hurt. Known dangerous design defect, no notice to purchasers. Modification to correct the problem would be relatively cheap. You'd think they'd recall these things before something really bad happens.
I know one thing: I'll never buy an Amana/Wirlpool ever again!!
I have the same situation. The oven gets so hot on the outside that it shuts down. After checking the reviews above, I looked at my door and noticed a slight bend on the inner oven door. I haven't ordered the parts yet to fix but will be doing so shortly. i alsohad issues with the plastic end caps on the top of the stove break on both side because it looks as if they used to big screws. Amana is a piece of junk. I also bought Amana microwave and refridgerator to match the oven. The fridge I had to replace the ice maker because it kept leaking water in the auto ice maker

This is wierd. I have the exact same problem, but it took a few visits from a service guy to come to that conclusion. I have a household appliance warranty with the local gas company, so they sent out a guy who is not specifically trained on Amana ovens. The symptom was a sporadically-malfunctioning control panel, and extreme heat around the panel. His first guess was a bad circuit board/panel (which he surmised was causing the heat), so he replaced the whole panel. I had to call back the first time I used it because the area around the panel was just as hot as before. Thinking he had found the problem, he adjusted the metal heat deflector sheild that guards the back of the control panel. Ultimately, that proved to make little difference. He finally found that my hinges had a little play in them, which was keeping the oven door from sealing properly. He is coming back with new hinges and a new piece of door insulation. Stay tuned.
I have the same problem... the control panel gets SO hot you can hardly touch it. Periodically, I will walk through the kitchen to discover the oven door just slightly ajar...enough to make the light come on. You have to push and hold the oven door closed for it to lock during the self clean cycle. And the other day, the (very hot) oven door fell open and hit my daughter in the head, who was looking in the window at the cookies baking inside! What a piece of junk.
Unfortunately, this oven came with the house we purchased last year, and I have no proof of purchase or any warranty coverage. Looks like I'll be saving to buy a new oven!
I have the same problem, only a slighly different model, Model # ACF3355AS, purchased in November of 2002 for just over $1000.00.
Same issue as described in the other posts, door hinges no longer keep the door shut, heat escapes, etc.,etc.,
I have called Amana, prior to finding these posts, to let them know of the issues, unfortunately I no longer have a warranty, so I get the standard response that I will need to schedule to have a technician diagnose the problem. Of course no mention of any recalls or that this seems to be a widespread problem. I will call again to see if I can get this issue escalated, and repaired, without charge.... these POS's should be recalled.
I have the same problem. Took me a while to figure it out on my own. The hinges are **** and they bend the door so that it can't close properly. the hot air heats the control panel and then it shorts out. I can bake for about 40 minutes before the unit shuts off. Had to buy my turkey cooked this year for Thanksgiving.
Should be a recall on it. Just got some new hinges and I'll see if they help at all.
Yes, same thing is happening with my Amana ACS3350AS. Just found out others have the same problem. I see that there was a lawsuit on it in Florida, and Amana /Maytag settled. I'm going to install new hinges and see if that helps.
