Delete voice mail by going through the keypad on your cell phone. The actual procedure depends on the kind of cell phone that you own. For example, on the Nokia 1100, hold down the "1" key while you are on standby. Tracfone connects you to your voicemail, where you can follow spoken menu instructions to listen to your voicemail. After you hear the voice message, you're asked if you want to delete your recordings.
This is not recommended, because connecting in this way uses up your minutes even if you just want to listen to them.
Use your landline phone to delete messages if you want to avoid using your Tracfone minutes. Turn off your cell phone so it doesn't ring and then call your cell phone number from a landline.
Press the "*" (star) key as soon as you hear your voice mail greeting. Then enter your password number and press the "#" (pound) key.
Listen to the instructions for accessing your voice mail, which can vary slightly depending on the phone you have. You are told the number of new and old messages you have, how to listen to them and how to store or delete them. Press the number for listening to the message to hear it, and then the number for deleting.
For Android cell phone, the easy way to delete old text messages and phone numbers is using Android data eraser program. With its help, you can easily access all text messages and phone numbers. Just preview and choose what you want to delete on program window. Android Mobile Eraser Wipe off Everything on Your Android Device

Unfortunately, once a text is deleted from the device it isn't able to be retrieved. Now if it's a different kind of message you may have some options. The only way to get that text back would be to have it resent.
I think you might be confusing the counter that keeps rack of caller ID information, and the counter that tracks messages stored in the answering machine - two different things, different purposes.
The answering machine part displays "new messages", but can store "old messages". For the caller ID part, look for a button on the handset that says "caller ID" - hit that, and then there will be a scroll up/down pair of buttons - you can look through your received caller IDs. Their may be a delete button on the phone (It's not clear what model you have), which will allow deleting that caller ID out of memory, but if not, having viewed the numbers, your "20" on the message counter should reduce.
Since you declined to specify the model of your Uniden DECT 6.0 system I can only suggest you select it from the list beginning here to download a copy of the manual.

If you wish to recover accidentally deleted text messages, contact numbers, call logs or other details from your mobile phones Sim Card then you are going to need to download a good Sim card data recovery program. That is How To Read Deleted Text Messages:
You will require USB sim card reader (any PC/SC Standards or Phoenix Standards based USB Sim Reader) to use the software and successfully recover data (contact numbers and text SMS) from the Sim card of your mobile phone
To use the software you simply connect your USB Card to the computer load up Sim card data recovery and it will allow you to view information including contacts numbers, and deleted SMS text messages along with the date and sending time of the message in simple report format.
Yet another essential detail: It might happen that your Nokia E52 is unable to read old messages from your sim card. At least this happened to me, when putting my old card (used in some 6-7 years old nokia phone) to a new E52. No message was visible but they were there!!! The solution: Put the card into your old nokia (switch it perhaps to the card memory) and then delete the old messages (below some number - you must try the amount- or all of them). Then the things work.
It is in fact an unpleasant incompatibility and Nokia should mend it!
When first turned on, select "messages." then down arrow to inbox or outbox. Select choice. For outbox, down arrow to SENT. Select. Hit the center button. scroll down twice to delete the one message. Scroll down once more to delete ALL messages from the sent outbox. Confirm and out they go!
Now, does anybody know how to email text messages so they can be saved?
