I have a Canon Power Shot A2000 IS and also had a problem with the camera not staying on after pressing the on/off button. Tried everything and was about to purchase a ac adapter to charge it. I noticed the strangest thing that while holding the camera nothing would happen. But if I rest the camera upright on a table for instance and hold it with the right hand and press the on/off button with the left hand the camera would come on even if just for a second or two. I was going nuts until I finally found the problem. There's a tiny clasp made of plastic on the camera body where the battery door clicks into to hold the door shut. Mine was broken and the door would stay open just enough not to notice it right away but enough that the batteries were not making contact. Since it's costly to repair it the two remaining choices are to tape the door shut or buy a new camera. Right now I have the door taped shut.
