Could be a bad humidistat switch, bad or stuck overflow float switch in tank, could be low on freon. All of these would cause what you are stating. I would start with cleaning the unit. Clean filters, coils and float switch. See if it works now. If not bypass float switch, (connect wires together) see if unit works, if not you will probably need to have serviced, a tech will have to check freon, and if its the humidistat it is cheaper to by a new unit.
Since you didn't post the manufacturer and model, this will be generalized.
Check the filters on the unit. Pay attention to presence of dirt on the coils of both the intake and the exhaust. They need to be clean and shiny.
Check your water level sensor. It may be choked with scale, and not able to move freely.
If you are using an extension cord, try plugging the unit directly to a wall outlet, or use a heavier guage cord (compressor overloading due to reduced voltage).
Post back the make and model if you can.
This is a Goldstar manual dehumidifier 50 quart capacity.
When the unit turns on, you can hear the compressor running. You should also be able to hear a fan running, and feel it blowing out the front / back. Does the fan appear to be working on your dehumidifier?
When I move the selector from a higher number (7 or 8) to zero, the fan starts and I can hear the compressor kick in. It will continue run this way for only about two minutes. I can move the selector again the same way and it will start again and quit the same as before. I have not checked the filters or the water level indicator. I will do that later after work. I have two of these dehumidifiers and both have the same problem.

I have Goldstar manual dehumidifier and the only way that I can start the machine is to turn the dryness selector to 0 and up to 6 or above and it will start to run. bothe fan and the compressor run but for only approx. 2 minutes and then it stops. If I move the selector again, it will start again. Help
