My hard drive wont connect, and the computer doesnt recognize it.
When i plug the hard drive into any computer, and turn it on (in automatic power mode) it boots, i can feel and hear the hard drive click, but it doesnt connect. the power light comes on, but no access light, and the drive soon shuts down. in manual power mode, the disk spins, but still no access light. the computers dont even recognize that its plugged in at all. ive tried several cables, and three computers, but all were futile. thanks in advance.
the hard disk was working just fine a few days ago, and is not password protected. the computer doesnt recognize it as plugged in, so i dont think i could remove the password anyway.the hard disk was working just fine a few days ago, and is not password protected. the computer doesnt recognize it as plugged in, so i dont think i could remove the password anyway.

Hi
have you used hard drive password to protect then remove the password if not then if your HDD is making lot sound and not able detect that might be your HDD is gone (HDD=hard disk).

I am taking for granted that you are using Windows, not sure which version ( XP , 7, 8 , 8.1 )
and if I am correct, but your computer does not recognize the drive, make sure the usb port is one that will give power to the external drive. You should use USB2 or if available USB3. Those are powered.
Click the Search feature for the particular version of Windows you are running and search for "Disk Management"
Look for the partition of the external drive you are using. It will be given a letter other than C: drive. May be D: E: F: etc etc etc. Sometimes your optic drive is the D: drive, you may need to purchase a program like Everest Ultimate to locate ALL your items on the MOBO.
If your able to find the External in Disk Management, you should be able to format it, rename it, change its functions, etc etc.
I think the drive needs to be allocated first. Just right click on my computer and select manage.
Now click on disk management on and the drive should be there around 990GB and it will say unallocated. Just right click and select new.Go through the steps and make sure you give a volume label and select the file system NTFS. Also select quick format as the drive will be formatted first.
I hope you have no data on the drive. If you have any data on the drive do not format it.
Definitely, You must turn off the External Hard drive when it is not in use, because as it is external and it comes with an external power supply, the power supply will not cut-off automatically when the computer is turned off. This is not the case for Internal hard drives that are built-in in the computers, their power supply will cut off automatically when the computer is shut down.
You can turn ON the external HDD when ever you need, that is even when u are working with the computer and if you doesnt need the hard drive then you can left it OFF....When ever you need the hard drive, you can just turn ON...and dont unplug and plug the USB wire frequently, let it be plugged in the computer. Whenever there is a need unplug and take it away. Because if you unplug and plug it back many times, then the usb port may become wide, which results in frequent disconnection of the device that is connected to that particular usb port...
Guess it is useful....
Is this a new drive? has it worked before? the usual sequence is to connect the external drive to a power source first, and then connect the usb cables to the PC. IF you know the usb cables are good and have verified that they are connected properly, try connect to a different usb port on the PC, sometimes ports go bad. If that still doesn't work, the most likely the hard drive has gone bad.
How do you have it connected to your PC? USB or Firewire? try plugging it in to different slots or try plugging it in on another computer to further isolate the problem. some external drives requires power adapter to work so make sure that you're using the power adapter if it comes with the device. if not, there might be something wrong with the device specially if it was working before
It sounds like the hard drive head crashed when you pulled the power plug. Unfortunately if you can't get drive to be recognized, you won't even be able to run any diagnostics. You will have to take the drive to an authorized repair shop who will have to check the electronics to see if the head will respond. Unless you have data on your drive that you absolutely need, you will probably save a lot of money by replacing rather than repairing the drive.
when you connect a pen disk to a usb port the pc recognizes it and mounts it automatically. it will show up just like a hard disk you can check it in My Computer if a dialog doesnt pop up
the hard disk was working just fine a few days ago, and is not password protected. the computer doesnt recognize it as plugged in, so i dont think i could remove the password anyway.
