The flexible shaft on my Ryobi EL15 trimmer shifts

The flexible shaft on my trimmer shifts downward sometimes and doesnt mate with the trimmer head assembly. I can remove shaft housing and slide the flexible shaft forward and get it to work, but usually it only works for a short period. Is there a clip or something loose somewhere?

Check the outer tube has not moved forward out of its housing at the engine end as this would make the inner too short.

SOURCE: Replacing Drive Shaft for a Ryobi 725r

The lower flex shaft should cost around $40, unless you order it online and have to pay shipping. You should be able to get one from your local MTD dealer. (Ryobi is owned by MTD)

SOURCE: Ref: Stihl FS46 string trimmer. Broken Flex shaft.

Remove orange sheild, remove single screw holding head in shaft then grab head with pliers and twist side to side until complete head is free. You should then be able to grab part of shaft. On power head loosen screws {about one turn each} that hold two white case halves near trigger,I think there are four, then there is a single torx screw on the bottom of lower case half in the middle that must be taken out to allow tube to be removed.Romove flexshaft from top.Check 4 plastic burnt to flexshaft,if there is you must replace tube liner as well, usally around bent part of tube the liner will go bad.

Ryobi trimmer Rlt30CES head slow down under revs

Sounds like a drive shaft/clutch type problem, I do not know the machine but suspect it uses a flexible shaft to the head has this union worn out or at the motor end there would be some kind of clutch which would leave the motor spinning on tick over (not the head) then engage on rev up. Perhaps this is faulty or has oil on it, could be its flexible shaft has got a worn end.

On my old B&D it throws a sprung disc out under centrifugal force to engage with its drive shaft coupler which at low revs the springs "win" to disengage it.

Its head end is easier first to check by removal of its line holder after that things are more complex with mine four screws remove what I call its nose cone to get into the clutch area.

If there is a wear issue run it at a gentle speed dabbing its head into some grass you may find the motor spins on but its head stops which will confirm the above.

Hope this helps..........

Ryobi weed eater upper and lower shaft spins, but head doesn't spin, why?

If not a clutched model, likely the flexible drive shaft is broken. Check 1st to insure the engine head is firmly positioned into the aluminum shaft case. If it is remove at the engine, disconnect the cable as necessary and pull out the shaft for close inspection.

I have a cs30 ryobi weedeater and something in the shaft is causing the weedeater to either stall out or completely shut off, how can i fix this problem?

Usually this is a fuel supply problem. It can be caused by a cracked fuel line, debris in the fuel tank of in the tank to carb fuel connection. If you have a primer bulb a pin hole in the primer bulb or (if so equipped) the line that goes to the primer bulb it will do the same thing. Small air leaks will cause the trimmer to run fine at idle but anytime you demand more speed it just will not speed up or it will stall. Additionally the diaphragm in the carb can also have a small hole or tear in it. (Located under the 4 small screw plate on the carb)

A problem in the shaft is rare unless the shaft itself breaks or the internal flexible drive shaft has a partial break and the spring material is unwinding. If this is the case the flexible drive shaft will have to be replaced. It requires removal of the engine from the curved shaft assy to replace. Once the engine is removed the shaft is supposed to just pull out. WHen installing a new shaft you must make sure the 4 sided drive spline drops into the string head or you an not install the engine correctly. The same goes for the engine to shaft mating area. Align the 4 sided spline.

At the motor drive end, (where the engine is).. the end of the flex drive should mate with the clutch housing. You may just need to remove the clutch-housing cover in front of the motor to access it and turn it until it accepts the flex drive.

I strip the cable inside my lawn trimmer it would turn my cutter below. Is this something I can repair or must I take it to shop?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. When you say you stripped the cable I am assuming that your talking about the flexible drive shaft. This can be replaced at home. However,.... ou did not state if this was a gas or electric model. At the moment I am assuming it is a 25cc Gas trimmer. To replace the flexible drive shaft the motor will have to be unmounted from the drive shaft housing. It will have 4 flat sides on each end that must mate correctly into the slots of the motor and the power head or you will not be able to re-mount the engine.

With a good model number I can provide you with a source of the replacment parts and probably what mounting hardware that has to be removed to change the fl;exible drive shaft.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Head will not drive. Can feel it slip between nut and motor.

inside the shaft is a flexible drive cord, at each end is usually a hex or torx head fitting that slides into a sleeve, theese can sometimes strip or even snap off and need replaced. remove one end of the shaft (either the engine or the spool) and the cord should slide right out easily. inspect each end for stripping and to make sure it didn't snap off inside the sleeves.
