First of all, you should stop saving any new files to your canon camera (or SD card) or taking new pictures with you camera.

Then find some photo recovery software from this site Best Computer Software, which is of high quality and easy-to-use.

Digital Photo Recovery for Windows

Digital Photo Recovery for Mac OS X

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Download and install the Digital Photo Recovery Software.

Step 2: Connect your camera (or SD card, memory card etc) to your PC or Mac.

Step 3: Scan the source drive where your lost pictures located.

Step 4: Recover the lost pictures and save them to another drive instead of the source drive.

After such a long time, you must have restored all your wanted photos back. I hope you also have learned a lesson to back up all important data.
But, if you unfortunately also encounter the similar data recovery problems, don't panic, stop using this memory card or drive and start to restore all your lost data back with the help of a reliable data recovery tool:
http://www.4cardrecovery.com/
This data recovery tool always can work well both on a camera/phone memory card and USB drive.
So, are you interested? If you want to have a try, you can read it here:

Have you tried this camera memory card on your computer?
If this memory card can be read functionally on your computer, you'd better copy off all your stored photos to another memory card or drive and format this card immediately to check whether it can still be read on your camera.
But, if this card unfortunately also gets some problems, you'd better try to apply a memory card photo recovery freeware to get all your stored photos back successfully for free:
http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/04/memory-card-error.html
In fact, this freeware helped a lot as the external hard drive of my friend was mistakenly formatted. It finally restored all the needed data of my friend. It always works well on both of a memory card and a hard drive. So, I believe it will also help you a lot.
Try to read more information of this freeware here:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/04/data-recovery.html
After experiencing these troubles, I hope you can learn a valuable lesson to timely back up everything important well all the time.

It is possible to recover formatted memory card only when you don't save any data to the formatted memory card. Because when you format memory card, the data remains there but the space it occupies is made available. So after the first format, you'll be able to carry out formatted memory card recovery with a near 100% success. But once new data is written to memory card, the chance of full memory card recovery will become less.

Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

You will need to use a flash card reader with this software. If you don't have one, get one, they're cheap:

Canon SD600 digital elph

Immediate solution is to buy a card reader and use it to download all images via your USB port. I suggest using Picasa3 (free software from Google) for the downloading and organization of your images, but other software works as well. Direct camera to computer download have been a longstanding problem as computers change (e.g. vista) and camera software doesn't.

Broken toggle

I had the exact problem with my SD600, which I had purchased in Jan 2007 (needless to say it was beyond it's warranty). I called Canon and it would cost me $99 just to have it looked at, and then any additional $$ for pars, shipping and taxes. It was suggested to take it to a local Canon Service Center, which I found in Irvine (through http://www.yelp.com/biz/canon-factory-service-center-irvine). They were able to repair my camera free of charge and would've sent it free of charge, but I was close enough to pick it up. And it only took 4 days for them to repair it. Please pass along this info!
