Suspected moisture in Furuno GPS/Plotter display

Furuno GP-1650W color GPS plotter, S/N 4374-2221 with FJIA1ES5 Ver.01 C-Map NT card: Display color looks washed out and is very hard to read over most of the screen - I suspect it has moisture in it. This problem began after a night of hard rains. and didn't clear up after more than 18 hrs of use. Brilliance and tone adjustments don't fix the problem, but they do change the display colors.. It functions in all modes, but is very difficult to read. This unit is used on a center console boat in the SoPacific (heat, rain, sun, no cold), but I have it here in CA so it can be repaired before returning it to the boat. What's the fix?

You need to determine if it's moisture or damage to the protective coating on the LCD glass. If the screen coating is damaged it will have patches or discoloration that resemble water spots like you see on windows and glasses exposed to hard water. If it's moisture between the glass and LCD you should be able to make out the tiny water droplets that are evenly spread throughout the screen. The only proper fix for a glass with damage to the protective coating is replacement of the bezel assembly. If it's moisture you can try inserting a few silica gel packs inside the unit. Don't try to disassemble the bezel (LCD/Screen) assembly. Just but the gel packs inside the 1650 chassis and give it a day or two. Otherwise, you're looking at factory repaire.

Ais and 1920c Furuno chart plotter

n the system setup, under “UNITS” I set BEARING to “MAG” (magnetic). This will cause the unit to display course / bearing information in relation to the Magnetic North and match magnetic compass readings. It is not the same as True North! One has to be careful with this setting. There are a number of areas where the earth's magnetic field is locally disturbed, sometimes very significantly. Your GPS may not account for it. - again, under “UNITS” I set “METRIC”.

Furuno GP-1800 GPS/Plotter switches on, display has only lights otherwise blank.

Try pressing the Brill or Tone key. Use the up arrow to increase Brill and the right arrow to increase Tone. Otherwise, you have an internal board failure and it will require service by tech.

Won't open the overlay screen

You must have a heading sensor input for radar/chart overlay. (i.e. PG500)

Data cards for Fununo 1850w

Furuno just stopped producing these models about a year ago. They use a special chart card. You can still purchase the cards from Navionics or C-map if you need to. I will tell you from experience that you should get your internal battery changed out if you havent done so already to keep from losing your settings and waypoints. The dealer will have to save them for you though and put them back on. Furuno made a GP7000 to replace this one and it's uses SDcards and is nothing like the rest of Furuno's product line. The best replacement for this unit is the Garmin GPSMAP 700 series. You can use your old furuno transducer if you have one (with an adapter plug). This garmin unit also has a built in GPS or you can use an external one. The 700 series will be shipped in April. Check out Garmin's website or mid-shore electronics.
