There could be several reasons for this problem but I can only think of the following:
1.) The internal sensor may have gone "bad". The sensors are sensitive and prone to failure. But before you give up, see #2 & 3 below.
2.) A few things to check:
- Make sure you are using the recommended white cleaning tablets*. If the tablets aren't used then there may still be oil build-up in the brewing chamber.
- When indicated during the cleaning cycle, be sure to remove the tray and bean container for at least 20 seconds and then replace, even if they are already empty.
*Cleaning tablets can be ordered from www.capresso.com.
3.) If you don't have cleaning tablets on-hand then you can try running a regular brewing cycle using white vinegar** instead of water. Follow with at least 2 cycles of clear water (to rinse) before brewing your first cup of java.
***This method is probably not recommended by your manufacturer. I have used it on my machines without incurring any problems but I can't guarantee that it's safe for your machine.

Good Luck!
Well, maybe jennifer2073, is right about the sensors, but unless they chage it, there's few sensors on the machine, but some contacts and micro switches, like the one in grounds tray, and water tank. I have a Capresso C3000 since 2005, and still runing great, one time in Capresso service center because of problems with PLC, witch is more likely to be your problem. The machine doesn't have sensors to check the quality of water or cleanlliness of system, what it does? It counts the number of cups you served to give you the message, this is the reason why you first get "clean machine", and after a while, "clean now". The one time I have to send mine to repair, they had a flat rate of $250,00, shipping included, they even send me the box for shipping, they replace a bunch o parts because I keep improvising repairs, and of course, made some damage, shortening tubes, pass them thru onther places, so on...o on.... I can tell you they did a great job, and pretty fast to.
PS. I'm European, and drink those litle tiny cups of strong coffee, around 6 to 8/day, my machine counting is now 385200 cups served, but I believe it made a full cycle and start from zero again.
My point, treat your machine well, and it will give you're money back in coffee pots.
