The wire to the carb bowl is a fuel shut-off solenoid. Needs battery voltage applied while the engine is starting/running. Your ignition switch will need a 'load' connection (battery voltage when 'ON' or 'START', off otherwise.

If your ignition switch is not suitable, you will have to rig something.

I am replacing the spark plug on a 5 hp Quantum engine that is on a Troy Bilt walk behind mower. I would like to know the spark plug gap setting on that motor.

I'm guessing you have a standard Champion J19LM plug, which has a gap of .030. They come pre-gapped from the mfg. and usually no need to adjust them. Most of the plugs on these engines have a .030 gap. There are very few exceptions that use a .020 gap (such as the RC12YC). Anyway, here's a link to a chart I like to use for reference: (there's a drop down menu at the top to change engines, but the standard Briggs engine is the one here).

I have a Troy Built 675 walk behind power mower (Briggs & Stratton 190cc) that tends to run for about 10 minutes then sputters and dies. I tried to switch the fuel but that did not help. It won't...

You probably have a baked ignition coil. The good news is they arent too expensive to buy and you can change it yourself with only some simple tools and a thin piece of cardboard!

You need to take the recoil cover off your mower and look at the coil area too....make sure you dont have the remains of an animal nest there. This is usually the cause of excessive coil heating.

Sometimes just taking the nest out solves the problem...but many times the coil damage is done. So, you can buy a new coil and swap it out while you have the cover off. The only special thing you need to do when you replace the coil is properly gap it to the magnets on the flywheel. This is where the thin cardboard comes in. I use the box the coil came in....cause it poker deck card thickness. You use it between the coil and the flywheel during the tightening and the you just slip it out when you are done. Thats it! Put the cover back on the mower and get to cutting!

Good luck and be careful!

Can't find owners manual for troy built 21''. How do I drain oil from engine.

Not knowing what model number mower you have, there are a couple of possibilities for draining the oil.

Number one: You can tilt the mower back on the handle bar and look at the bottom side of the engine for a drain plug that is easily accessible and unobstructed so that the oil would drain straight into a container with the mower elevated on something high enough to get the container under it. Loosen the plug then put it up on the blocks, saw horses or whatever you are using, get your catch container under it and remove the plug.

Number Two: Start the engine and warm it up for a few minutes to make the oil flow easier. Set it up on a work bench with the oil dipstick tube toward the outer edge of the bench. Line up a catch container on the floor below it and tip the mower over on its side and pour the oil out the dipstick tube into the container. Just use caution not to touch any hot parts of the engine when lifting it up. This is the way Briggs & Stratton recommends changing the oil in their engines which do no have an accessible drain plug.

I OWN A 2006 TROY BUILT HORSE 23HP. THE PROBLEM IS THE ENGINE IS HARD TO CRANK. I REPLACED THE STARTER AND BATTERY. COME TO FIND OUT THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT TO CRANK IS TO TAKE THE SPARK PLUGS OUT. ITS...

You either have a problem with the wiring and its not allowing the voltage to flow freely to the start or there is some type of internal engine failure that is causing the valves to stay closed.
