I have a 10 year old Bernina Artista 180 embroidery machine. I am thinking of changing my computer which will mean that I cannot connect my embroidery machine unless I can find the correct cable for this purpose. I need one with a 9 pin serial port on one end and USB on the other. I am aware that it is possible to find this sort of cable but do I need a special one to transfer data from my computer to my embroidery machine and, if so, where do I obtain this cable? Thanks.
Just happen to be sitting in front a Bernina 180 at this very moment - with the connecting cable attached to a Keyspan USA-19HS Adapter. It is a current adapter available from either Keyspan (www.keyspan.com) or any number of computer retailers - physical or online. Seems to run around $30.00 just about everywhere. Auction sites may have bargain. Worked like a charm on an older XP computer as I was able to test the older software I had due to it having the necessary parallel port the the older dongle. While I am fairly certain this combination would also work on my Windows 7 computer, I am unable to test it as I have not come across a parallel adapter that will work with the older software parallel dongle. I've had other programs/peripherals that utilize usb to serial adapter (on my Windows 7) that have worked fine, so I suspect this would also be the case.
Hope this helps. If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Happy stitching,
Kim

I used a Dynex USB to Serial converter. It works well with Windows 7 and the free download from Bernina "Artlink'. If all you need is to connect to the machine and download pre-made art this is the way to go. My wife was convinced she needed to upgrade $500 software when all she needed was the download capability that Bernina now gives away for free. You can still resize and all so it's nice for a freebie.
Which type of cable did you use null or straight through?

Thinking about buying a 180. It has the version 4.01 software and the modules 175 and 185 embroidery units to it. It also has a reader writer box and the card. I hafve been told that it is so old and that the software is to old. She has lots of CD's too. What do you think?
Problem is that the Bernina software you are using expects to talk to a 'COM port and the PC's USB serial interface doesn't automatically default to a COM port. Make sure you have installed the software that was delivered with your USB-to-Serial adapter and look on your PC's 'Device Manager' under 'Ports' - you should see the USB adapter listed and it should be assigned to a COM Port number. You need to check what COM port numbers are accepted by the Bernina embroidery software (sorry, I cant remember and haven't got one here presently) - it should be in the Options menu. You have to ensure that the USB 'virtual COM port' is the same as that which is set in the Bernina software. If the Bernina software doesn't support the COM port allocated to the USB interface, go to 'Properties, Port settings, Advanced, COM port number and set this to the same as the COM port number in the Bernina software - hopefully this should set up the link OK, provided you haven't got a COM port clash - to avoid this, it's usually best to choose a COM port number of 2 or above.
