Start by checking to insure you're getting proper voltage through the cord. Make sure the bag emptor and front brush roll nozzle are installed properly as each must activate the switch for it to run. It could have a defective switch.

SOURCE: kirby vacuum

There are 2 safety switchs, one on the front that the nozzle activates, and one on the side that the bag asembly activates. The motor brushes and/or armature maybe bad.

Generic problem for all Vacuums
Kirby Sentra vacuum burning belts
posted by campoclan on May 02, 2008
Have had Kirby vacuum for a couple of years since I've had it I burn at least two belts in two months. I keep roller clean, what is the problem?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Some of the problems that people have is that they feel they have to have the vacuum head all the way to the floor and that makes the belt work that much harder. The key to the best cleaning is to raise the height adjustment all the way to the top and once it’s there then drop it down one notch or setting @ a time until you here the tone change. Then try it to see if the vacuum if picking up well if not drop it down one more notch and that should be the setting it is supposed to be for your type of carpet. And remember to use the genuine Kirby belts instead of the Kirby replacements, they will work better. And your suggestion that to keep the brushroll clean and free spinning on each end and also keep the bottom plate clean of dirt and grease because if there is a build up it will move slower and leave black marks on the carpet. I hope this will help and if not contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Kirby G4 was surging, then a flash of light and a pop from outlet!

the surge is caused by a faultering armture, might be caused by low carbons or sticking carbons, strip the motor down for inspection. Or take it to your local kirby service centre shop for clean and service and polish. price range from 39 to 59

My kirby generation 3 wont come on

Make sure cord is not damaged. Check to see nothing is blocking hose or carpet nozzle(where beater brush is or brush roll). Plug unit in to a receptacle that you know has power going to it. (Lamp you know works when plugged into same. Using hose on front, make sure bag bottom completely attached to exhaust, the hose has a little arm like thing that will depress the safety switch on the front of the unit, and turn on using foot switch at the back of the unit. If these do not work, it could be one of two safety switches, dirt may have fouled or switch may need to be replaced. No power

There should be an onboard fuse for the Kirby vacuums. Look on the bottom of the motor. Hope this helps.

110-220V

You may have burnt up the motor field when it was plugged into a 220V power source. But there are drop down transformers you can get to reduce the voltage form 210 to 110. AS Radio Shack or similar store would have them.
