To plug the dock into the receiver to supply power and interface with the iPod you would have to have one with a built in iPod. Most receivers will not do that, the most common way to connect an iPod to a receiver is using a 3.5mm to
RCA cable. You don't even need the dock to do this, you can plug the
iPod directly in. You can find this cable at most electronics shops if you don't want to buy online, like Best Buy or Radioshack.
Make sure you connect the white and the red end of the RCA cable to the correct sockets on your receiver, and the small 3.5mm jack into the iPod or the iPod dock, you have to turn the iPod volume up and select the corresponding input on your receiver. If you plugged the 2 RCA jacks (white & red) into the socket labeled "AUX" or "Video 1" you have to select "AUX" or "Video 1" in order to hear the sound.
