Restoring the WD
Software and Disk Image
After you have reformatted your drive for use on Mac computers, go to
http://support.wd.com
and see Knowledge Base answer ID 7 for information about
downloading and restoring the
Mac versions of the WD Driv
e Utilities and WD Security
software and disk image.
The WD SmartWare software is not available
for Mac computers with this drive model.
As far as I remember WD just copies the software into the PassPort drives and you don't have to install anything you can just run the software from the drive. If that is still the case then first take a backup of that software (basically copy that software folder to some place in your internal drives) then format the drive (make sure you select NTFS as the file system for the drive when formatting). Formatting will erase all the files in the drive so make sure you have backup of you personal files also. Formatting also resets the drive back to factory setting (if you want the WD software back then just copy it from the backup to the PassPort drive).
Sadly you don't. Dropping a hard drive and having it still work is something you should never expect. You could pry the case open and put the drive it in an empty external drive case and see if it works, or try a new cable, but the most delicate part is the drive mechanism itself, and if anythings broken, that is most probably it. You could probably get a replacement, maybe not WD, for around $60 and one I got on special $70 including postage from an online seller a few weeks ago had a 500GB WD drive in it.
When you connect the hard disk to your computer, there will be a Virtual Drive similiar to a CD drive which can be accessed from My Computer. The drivers will be in the WD Virtual Drive. But the Virtual Drive will not show up if you have disabled it.
Alternately you can download the software for enabling the Virtual Drive from the WD website. The drivers are also available at the WD website. You just have to select the right model of your hard disk from the website. The website is posted below:
When you connect the drive, ignore the sync option. Do note in your "my computer" WD will have two drive letters (one is a read only drive) that contains the sync software. The other drive letter will be where you data is stored. If you used the sync software to backup your files; you need to install to get your data back. If you simply copied your data from one drive to another; the files should be there in their original form.
Hi Dear! This problem could be solved through a software. You should use Western Digital Disk Manager, your WD hard disk will work properly after using that your WD hard disk pass all test of the software. When it will pass all test it will work properly and in other condition if it will not pass then you should try again so that the software will fix the error and it will made workable.
Thank You
Assuming you are using XP, Vista, or 2000 you can format it as a NTFS drive. while a lt of folks do not like Vista, this is one area where it really shines.
Plug in your WD PASSPORT.
Bring up the START menu -> right click COMPUTER-> select MANAGE -> select STORAGE ->select DISK MANAGEMENT.
Find the dive -> select/highlight the WD PASSPORT -> right click and select FORMAT. make sure to format as an NTFS drive. Depending on the size of the drive this might take a while - so go have dinner and a movie.
Seagate/Maxtor has hard drive tools that can recertify your hard drive. Maxblast with powermax or segate tools. Recertification tests the hard drive without corrupting contents.
I would download these and test the hard drives with the manufacturers software instead of software made for generic devices.
I ran a generic diagnostic on a WD 40 gig hd, 15min into it it failed diagnostics, got an RMA from WD sent it back and I tracked results.
They had it 2 min before sending it in for repair. I downloaded their Software and tested another wd drive, 45 secs it took to detect problems, generic software took 22min.
