My cd/dvd device is not working...i have had no trouble up until this: When I ask to fix the problem I get this message:windows can not load the device driver for this software. The driver may be corrupt or missing (code 39)

Hmm, sounds different to the usual problems I've come across but try this:
Paste the following into a new text document and "Save As..." type "All Files (*.*)" and call it "DVD Fix.bat"

Run the file and restart your computer when prompted.

If you're trying to write to a blank disc, make sure in the drive's properties that you have recording/burning enabled. If you do, try re-installing your CD/DVD burning suite. If you didn't have one, try a system restore.

If this doesn't work or you've disable system restore, you can go into hardware manager and roll-back the driver. If you don't have a roll-back available. uninstall the driver and restart your computer. A default Windows driver should then install.

Check the drive is physically performing - does it load/eject the disc? Does it spin-up? Are you able to read any discs?
I you have any further problems, it would help if we had the model name of your laptop.

You will need to re-install the driver. Right click the device in device manager and select properties. Navigate to the driver section and uninstall all existing drivers. (It may *not* give you the option to do that, depending on how corrupted the driver is, but it should.)
Reboot the PC.
Upon reboot, Windows should find the new device and install generic drivers. It will probably ask you to reboot a second time.

Well, that only means that the device is getting electrical power, and the "data" cable between the device and the motherboard is connected, and that Windows has loaded the correct device-driver for the device.

It does NOT mean that the LASER inside the drive is working correctly -- it's possible for the LASER to have stopped working.

Spend $40, and buy a new CD/DVD reader/writer, to replace the "dead" unit. This is cheaper than paying a technician $25 to $50 to try to trouble-shoot "hardware" problems inside the drive.

Check in device manager. To do this. 1st right click my computer, 2nd Click properties, 3rd click hardware, 4th click Device manager, 5th check that the computer is seeing the DVD/CD-ROM drives by double clicking the DVD/CD-ROM drives words or click the + symbol next to DVD/CD-ROM drives, the drop down menu will list your device if it’s there. If a device is listed double click the device. If it says it’s working properly click driver in the top bar and uninstall, then re-boot, the system will re-load the driver on re-booting. If the driver was corrupt it will re-install it correctly.
If the system cannot find the driver on re-booting it's missing from the systems file, go to the Support Fujitsu site and download and install the driver. Its free all you have to do is put the laptop details in the appropriate boxes and all the drivers for that laptop will be listed.
From your description of the error message it’s no doubt a corrupt or missing driver.

I had the same problem on my Sony Vaio and I found a free program called "CD Tray Pal" You just click on the desktop icon and it loads and windows recognizes your drive. Amazing, after a while, it fixed itself and I did not have to use it anymore! Hope this helps. http://www.e-systems.ro/ You should be able to find it on this site.

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it.
