I had exactly this problem. Resetting via the menu didn't work. Removing the battery for 24 hours didn't work. HOWEVER, using the menu to change the resolution from super fine to fine did fix the problem. After that, I was able to change it back to super fine without a problem.
Oh, I didn't mention. proforming a reset does not cause you to lose any photos, but you will have to reset the date and time.Oh, I didn't mention. proforming a reset does not cause you to lose any photos, but you will have to reset the date and time.

The DVR-530 works with SD cards, which max out at 2GB. Your 8GB card is actually an SDHC, not an SD card. While SDHC cards fits into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in this camcorder. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way this camera works.
Plug the SD card with contact terminals facing away from battery. It most likely is using internal memory which is much smaller. All cards under 4gb are normal SD. The camera should be able to format the card, or use an adapter and windows will format (default settings).
The install CD and cable should be included in box w/camera... Vivitar brand was recently bought out by Sakar last year (August 21st, 2008) which means support is likely discontinued. I have the installation CD. One upside of cheap consumer stuff is buying direct online - from China! Check ebay, the cable looks generic enough.
Problem is not with Vista or the camera drivers. More likely it’s that the camera is set in “macro mode” which is used for taking photos of things real close. On the right side of the camera there is a slide switch, you want to be sure that it is in the up position (Normal). If the switch is in the correct position, look if the lens is clean. Even if the LCD shows a good image a smudge on the lens will show up on the photo.
I had the same problem and purchased a new battery to resolve the problem. I also purchased a 110v battery charger for the vivitar 550 camera and recharged to old battery.
Same problem - tried the reset - didn't work.
