Dryer shuts off after 15 minutes

I have replaced the belt, the motor is fine. When I take the top off to let it run, it starts right up and runs. When I put it back together, it has a hard time starting, runs for 10 minutes, then shuts off and won't restart for 30 minutes. Vents are clean, door switch is good, thermostat was replaced in winter.

There can be many reasons why your dryer will not start or turn...

The most common causes are the belt breaking or jumping off, or the motor going bad...

Here are a couple of tips that I wrote will help you to figure out why your dryer will not run...

Our dryer starts up and runs for a while (15-25mins) then a sound develops and the dryers stops working. It appears that whenever it cools down it will run again. On start up sometimes a strange sound is...

You definitely have a motor issue starting to develop. The motor bearings will usually allow the motor to run initially, but start to get loud after they heat up and eventually bind causing the motor to stop. The motor has a thermal switch on the side that will shut the motor off if it gets too hot, and will re-set after about 15 or 20 minutes.
The motors for this style dryer (I can't look up the exact part as I need the complete model # off your machine's model tag) are usually about $140-$160.
If you would like to get the motor and install it yourself, let me know and I can provide you walk-through directions on replacement of the part.

Crosley CDE8000W Dryer has electric burning smell and shut down

it is most likely the belt. the squealing noise is because the motor is turning, but the belt is not. a replacement belt is not too expensive and it is fairly easy to replace. if you need directions how to replace it, let me know

My dryer will not start. It is not locked. I've turned it off and unplugged it for 30 minutes. All the buttons work fine, but the timer just flashes when I push the start button. Help!

If dryer does not spin it is usually a problem with the belt or the motor. Check also door switch.

See also following indications from Repairclinic:

It won't tumble If your dryer doesn't tumble, check these:

Belt
Motor
Door switch
Belt Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt, and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time.

Click here for a belt installation diagram.

Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor:

  • Remove the belt.

  • Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

  • Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.

If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor.

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor.

Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
