    OpenVMS Freeware distributions

I see references all over that OpenVMS OS is freeware but I haven't been able to find an actual download link yet.

Nor have I been able to find the hardware req's yet.

I have run across a couple of forums (Unix-related). I'm sure you'd get a lot of support and info OpenVMS forums, too.

    Still lookin....

Might have to give HP a call. I'll let you know if I can find anything more.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

HERE's a forum that will likely be just the ticket for you.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

Wow. This site is v-e-r-y well organized (openvms.org)

    LOTS of documentation.

    Open Source and Freeware.
    HELP for VMS Beginners
    HOBBYIST Forums

I believe between HPs OpenVMS site and openvms.org you'll find everything you need.

Still, please do, post back w/ any questions, etc.

Lots of information about OpenVMS HERE on Wikipedia.org, too.

The latest stable release, according to Wiki', is 8.3. And, they list it as a proprietary OS which means you'll have to purchase it (from HP/Compaq since they bought out DEC).

    Hello Narvaar

Were you able to find the information and a source for the software you are looking for w/ the information and links I provided in my solution?

I did quite a bit of research on your behalf for this your request ("problem"). If my "solution" lead you to what you were looking for, would you kindly take just a moment to re-rate my solution as a "FixYa"? I would be most grateful if you wouldn't mind.

Thank you so much. And thank you for using FixYa!

    BJ @:)

Thank you so much, Navaar, for the "FixYa" rating. :)

W/ regard to your new problem...:

We recommend you open a new problem to address a new subject - particularly after your original problem has been rated.

This will enable other experts to see your new problem, too, and hopefully, pull in some more expertise for you.

This won't be difficult (opening a new problem), I promise. Just copy the new problem you've described out of this post and place it in your new one.

Include a link to this post, too, in your new one if you like.

Use a topic for the new problem that most accurately describes the issue (e.g. "Alpha Server Won't Boot")

If you'd like me to help you w/ this problem, I'd be happy to. I can watch for your problem post or you can click on my "Ask Me" button. I will caution you that, while I'm pretty decent w/ hardware, I'm not experienced w/ Compaq's Alpha Servers so, how much in depth I'll be able to assist you outside the hardware might be limited.

I'm game though. We can use some of those forums I found, too. One of the forums in particular I found was incredibly well organized and had a wealth of resources and information.

When you post your new problem or "Ask Me", include any subassembly hardware information you can, too. (e.g. for that riser card your unable to test) Where we can't find info on the model Alpha Server you mentioned, maybe we'll get lucky w/ the subassemblies (motherboard, riser card(s), etc)

This information will give me (or other experts) a good head start. Then we can go from there.

Another thing to do is to, while you're working w/ one or more experts on a new problem here, get one or more posts up on that forum I talked about, too. Let's see if, between the two forums, we can get your issues sorted out or at least diagnosed.

    Thank you again, Navaar

    BJ @:)

    Thank you

Control-M is workload automation (traditionally called batch scheduling) software obtained by BMC Software via its 1999 acquisition of Israel's New Dimension Software. It was originally developed for IBM mainframe computers (OS/MVS operating system), but has since expanded and is also available for distributed computing platforms including Unix, Windows, Linux and OpenVMS environments.

You have not provided much to go on here. Is the system up and running or do you have only a single drive? You should be able to do a "SHO ERR" and see any errors logged to the errlog that will indicate the hardware issue. Using "anal/err" or Clue, you should get the error details. Please post what you find here and I'll provide suggestions.

DKA0 failed to open & DKA400 failed to read

Check the errlog files using CLUE or Anal/ERR. There should be some entries there that will give us a clue. Since more than one drive is effected, I'd be looking toward a controller failure.

wow. from the dark ages of DEC. VMS. OS.
sounds like bad drive if it can not be mounted.(or disk bad)
sounds like you are 42 years behind the upgrade curve too...
i used to work on all DEC systems. so know that . 1975
the DS10, is now 18 years old.

here is a relic manual, on that

http://zzz.physics.umn.edu/_media/computing/department/ds10-cr.pdf

is this your only DS10, of not try the drive on system #2?
ahh its now called OPENVMS,, amazing thing that is.

open vms was ported to ALph chips. 1992
then 2001 port of OpenVMS to the Intel Itanium architecture
so it's an 17 year old OS.

Driver for scsi disk seagate ST318406LW

Here you go:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

and read it also it's important for you:

As has been remarked before, "SCSI is a collection of optionally
implemented -- or optionally misimplemented -- features", and the
other classic remark, "None of the S's in SCSI are Standard".

There is typically no requirement for what some platforms might call
a low-level format for SCSI disk devices accessed by OpenVMS.

The volume-level format -- the file structure -- is established with
the OpenVMS INITIALIZE command.

There is apparently a configuration-level or hardware-level SCSI
incompatibility here. That the console can identify the device
means that some simple operations have succeeded -- that the console
has identified the device does not imply that the device will operate,
nor that the device will operate under any particular I/O load.

Please contact your hardware support vendor or storage vendor for
assistance with the requisite integration and testing, and please
also see the OpenVMS FAQ for related discussions of third-party
hardware issues, requirements, testing, and support considerations.

The effort involved in qualification of peripheral devices is large,
and involves detecting, isolating and resolving obvious functional
incompatibilities and obvious errors within the host, controller
or drive interfaces, as well as more subtle considerations such
as ensuring that the particular device thermal-cooling and other
environmental requirements are met. Acquisition of a supported
device is often far cheaper than performing a local qualification,
and particularly when -- such as is the case here -- errors are
encountered. Additionally, if operational problems should arise,
then the supported configurations will typically see the necessary
remediation work.

The device support effort involved can range from trivially simple
to what is effectively cost-prohibitive, and the particular results
and which extreme might be involved are not entirely clear at the
onset of the testing and support effort. Put another way, there
is definite value in the supported device configurations.

Additionall, your OpenVMS version is outdated, and in need of an
upgrade. While the OpenVMS Wizard is entirely unfamiliar with the
rated capacity of this Seagate device, the Wizard will also call
your attention to the maximum disk capacity and storage-ECO-related
information in the OpenVMS FAQ. If you cannot upgrade from V7.1-2,
please make certain that you have all current ECO kits applied.

The OpenVMS Wizard is not in a position to provide device qualification
and device integration assistance at no cost -- having been involved
in this, this effort can involve weeks or months of technical effort;
far beyond what the OpenVMS Wizard can offer. Again, please contact
your hardware support or storage vendor for this assistance, or please
then expect to become of a subject matter expert for SCSI.
