Have compac persario m2000. The power supply will

1) The AC adapter should ALWAYS be plugged into the laptop FIRST, then plugged into AC power. If not, this could create a voltage spike.

2) Let's look at the DC Power Jack, for the Compaq Presario M2000 series of Notebook PC's,

The DC Power Jack is mounted to a removable circuit board.
Enlarging the view of the jack, shows us there is an Inductor.

The small 'can' standing up on the power board. This chipset could have gone south. (Bad)

How to know? Replace it, or dig out your dual trace oscilloscope. See if the Inductor works.

Could also just be cracked solder joints, of the DC Power Jack, TO that small circuit board. Solution would be to resolder it/them.

DC Power Jack is in good shape, soldered tight to the motherboard, and ruled out as the problem?
(Since you know the AC adapter is good)

Then the problem would be the Inductor on that power board, or power correcting chipset.

What one is it? Dunno.
DO KNOW is has J leads on the bottom.
CAN give examples, and perhaps you can identify using them.

Your computer has an open circuit on the system board. If you have data on the machine you can remove the hard drive and connect it to a PC, Sorry I can't think of a more elegant solution. I hope I'm wrong.

Charge it first for sometime before powering it up. If it doesn't help. Clean your RAM card with soft eraser only its edge connector. Do it after you disconnect its battery and be sure that its power supply is also not connected to it. Then put eveything back and power it again.

This is true, you will not be able to charge the battery without the correct charger. For mostly all laptops, when the charger is not maintaining a charge, it is time for a new one. However, it does not have to be the manufacturer's adapter, but I recommend purchasing the battery made for the Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook.

Sorry it took me a while to track down your computer.  Basically you can hold two 1GB chips in your computer.

You can also upgrade the HDD as large as you would like, but that is not going to be cheap, and you have a large enough hard drive.  

My power plug that goes in the computer gets hot enough to melt the plastic ring on the end of the plug. so i am going to get a new power board and try that.

For something like that, I need the Computer, try and open the Computer and remove the Battery the BIOS Battery, and place it back, and see what happens...

Hi, Well, first, do you have the correct ac adapter?It's possible to have an adapter that will run the system, but not provide enough juice to run the machine AND charge the battery. Did you replace the battery with a brand new one? Thanks

Check the ac adapter is the proper one for that laptop. Check the power jack is not damaged or loose. let laptop site without battery or power for a few hours. remove battery and retry power. try another ac adapter if that doesn't work, you may have a reset button but not likely to solve the problem. sounds like motherboard is damaged, or something blew.
