Your old Toshiba laptop most likely does not have a firefly port.
The only way to use your firefly device on the Toshibe is to purchase a firefly PCMCIA adapter card and plug it into the Toshiba's PCMCIA slot and install the card driver.
Please click on this link for details and prices for this adapter :-

My Gateway NV53A

No.

At least not in replacing a graphics card. More to follow towards the end.

The ATI RS780M is a graphics chipset. The GPU is mounted on a small square circuit board. The circuit board is mounted to the motherboard, via a BGA surface mount. (Ball Grid Array)

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

The Integrated Circuit for graphics, or graphics chipset, is a G.P.U.,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

The GPU used is an ATI RS480M.
Example of an ATI RS480M chipset,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-pcs-ATI-200M-RS480M-216MPA4AKA22HK-chipset-with-balls-/280733143715?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415cffd2a3

The left side is the Top view.
On the Bottom view shown on the right, note the Solder Balls.
These are on the end of contact pads, which are flat on the end.
The flat end is also gold plated, before the solder ball is mounted to it.

To explain a BGA surface mount;
Compare to an older Intel Pentium 4 processor, that uses a Socket 478 processor socket.

The bottom of the Processor has contact pins. 478 of 'em.
The processor socket has matching socket holes. (478)

With a BGA surface mount there are no contact pins, nor socket holes.
The chipset to be mounted has Solder Balls on the bottom.
The motherboard has matching Copper Pads. (Which are also gold plated)

The graphics chipset is set into place on the motherboard, with the Solder Balls lining up with the Copper Pads.
Heat is then applied at a specific temperature, and length of time.
The solder balls melt, which solders the graphics chipset to the copper pads.
(Which in turn solders the graphics chipset to the motherboard)

Proper method of removing, and installing a graphics chipset, using a BGA surface mount, is to use a BGA Rework Machine.
One example at work,

Scroll down.
Click on the red -> Take a few minutes to view the IR650 demo

There is a method to increase the graphics 'power', however.

Involves using a desktop computer PCI Express graphics card, a desktop computer power supply, and and adapter for attaching the PCI Express graphics card to the laptop.

A) http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/how-to-make-an-external-laptop-graphics-adaptor-915616

B) http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PE4H.html

Yes, cuts down on portability somewhat. Everything can be put in a carrying attachment, but the power supply does have to be plugged into AC power.

Have a toshiba a10 and a vizio hdtv, what cable do I need to connect the two

Hi.

You don't say what you intend to do once the 2 devices are connected. I am going to assume that you just want to use the vizio hdtv as a large external monitor.

The laptop's vga (15-pin blue or black D-shaped) port can connect direct to the hdtv via it's blue vga (15-pin blue D-shaped) port.

However, your toshiba a10 laptop is relatively old, discoontinued technology with (in original specification) low RAM (256mb ddr), a single, slow processor (2.2ghz celeron) and slow (4300rpm), small hard drive (30gb), with limited, low level vga graphics capability, running xp home edition operating system. VGA is a slow analogue video technology.

To get the full benefit of the hdtv, which is almost state-of-the-art, you need a laptop with a fast dual or quad core processor, 3-4gb ddr3 RAM, 320-500gb 5400-7200rpm or solid state HDD, running the latest windows 7 operating system. Such a laptop would have hdmi ports and powerful, fast, state-of-the-art graphics capability.

A new laptop would unlock the full spectrum of , high definition video, high speed audio-visual streaming, fast video-editing, multimedia functionality between the two devices.

For your current laptop you need a male-to-male 15-pin, D-Sub VGA cable.

For the recommended or a similar, modern laptop you would need an HDMI cable.

Hope this helps.

Video / graphics upgrade

Laptops use graphics chips that are soldered onto the motherboard. Because of space constraints in portable computers, this is the only practical design. Since the graphics chip is built in to the computer, it cannot be upgraded. This is one advantage of desktop computers, which typically use PCI or AGP slots that accept video card upgrades. While graphics chips in laptops may not be quite as high-performance as the video cards in desktop models, companies such as ATI and Nvidia have developed portable graphics chips that deliver impressive 2D and 3D performance."

Upgrade my graphics

Be warned: If the upgrade is possible at all for your laptop, it can be a time-consuming operation that involves disassembling virtually your entire notebook, so don't enter into this process unless you are willing to accept the risk of doing serious harm to your machine.
On some newer, high-end notebooks, the graphics card can be accessed simply by opening a panel on the bottom of the computer. But for most older machines, disassembly will take more steps.
The first thing you need to know is that your laptop can probably support only a handful of very specific graphics cards, if the card can be upgraded at all. Your best source for an upgrade card will likely be the manufacturer that made your portable.
Be sure to consult your laptop's service manual (which can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's support page) before attempting to open up your machine. Also, make sure you guard your hardware against possible electrostatic discharge by wearing an antistatic wrist strap whenever you handle any internal components.

If you really want to upgrade your graphic card, let me know and post the additonal question in the thread. I will try to answer your questions.
