Go to Control Panel
SEE mouse icon... OPEN this
see if the touch pad is disabled

Try to go to the site Sony VAIO model specofic download latest driver for the touch pad

there are specific setting to enable the pad somehate it some love it but you can sort it out by looking at Control Panel /device manager etc

if USB mouse is working at least you can navigate to find issue

The cursor will not move I think I have locked the touch pad by mistake

Use a temporary external USB mouse, Click Start button from your laptop. Type "mouse" in Search Program & Files, click mouse under control panel. click Hardware tab, click properties, click change settings, click driver tab, check if the device is enable or click update diver or rollback driver if necessary.

Cursor jumps to corner of screen, is erratic

have you tried a usb mouse ?? as if that works it will be the touch pad is playing up. you can disable it and use a wireless mouse or usb one. as it would be cheaper then replacing the touch pad.

Cursor frequently jumping all over the screen when typing on my Sony VAIO VGN-FW340J/B 16.4 Notebook PC

I have had the same problem...The touchpad mouse is incredebly sensitive. What is likely happening, is your wrists are coming into contact with the pad and the sensor interprets it as a click and moving your cursor. My solution was to install a usb mouse (mine was wireless) and disable the touchpad.

While I'm typing, the cursor moves to another place in the sentence or on the screen. This is a huge problem, because when I'm tying, the cursor goes back anywhere it wants to in the sentence, which mixes...

Try an external mouse. I have seen this happen many times, and it is usually the users hand brushing the integrated laptop mouse pad.
If the external mouse works and the problem is not there, then try again with the internal pad, and watch to see if your hands or fingers brush against it.

If it still happens even with the external mouse and you are sure you are not touching the pad accidentally, then you may want to contact manufacturer of computer, check for updated USB drivers as well.

Your internal mouse runs off USB, and there is a possibility there may be a glitch there that could be resolved with an update.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 and until a few minutes ago my touch pad was working with no problems. I installed a wireless mouse and that works fine. But I cannot control the cursor with the touch pad or red...

Try going to Start>Control Panel>Printer and other Hardware and look for mouse pad or something like that. I think the problem is that you can only use either the mouse pad or the mouse, can't use them both at the same time.

Left mouse button and mouse pad sometimes stops functioning on the sony vaio vgn-ar51e

It's most likely a loose cable inside the notebook then makes contact intermittently. Or, your touchpad is faulty.

It might be worth having the machine looked at by someone certified to take it apart.
