I think my flash is too bright?

First check exposure compensastion. make sure its zero. After that set flash to i-TTL. Note that you must have some distance from the subject so that the light will have space to spread. D40 with kit lens cant do macro shot. Eventhough its on automatic mode, to near with subject can make the picture to bright.

Second, check your ISO. when condition is bright, use ISO 200 and lower. Its advised not to use fully auto mode, use P instead. P mode is also automatic mode with some fixed value like the ISO and white balance while automode, everything is automatic. this can make your camera confused with your needs.In P mode, the camera will adjust the shutter and aperture for you. Or try shot with A or S.

third. Use the right metering. Metering function is to supply information to the body on how to adjust the value. Its advised to point and half press shutter at the well balanced light part of the scene so that the picture will not over or underexposed. Use the AE-AL lock function to lock the setting. Try each metering.

bear in mind that internal flash fire direct flash to subject not same ad external lighting that you can bounce to the ceiling. Normally internal flash only use to fill-in the scene, which main lighting is supply from external flash.
