Are you using EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, which means the hard drive is in a box, and you connect it to computer with USB cable?
If so, do the following
1. Try to plug and unplug and plug USB cable at the port on computer.
2. While plugged in, try to shake the plug a little.
3. Try to plug the USB cable to USB port at the back of the PC case, not the port at the front
4. Check the usb cable, buy a new one, or borrow one (its cheap)
5. Still does work? bring it to Customer service, there must be an error on the box itself.
Check that the USB cable can provide enough power to the hdd. Check that the USB port is powered. Older USB slots may not have enough power to run larger external HDDs, there you may require separate power to be plugged into the hdd. Are you using the original USB cable provided with the external HDD?
I hate this message.
You can use a program like PC Wizard from CPUID that will tell you what all of you pc specs are.
From your specs you may not have usb 2 ports.
Device manager should also say what usb ports you have.
The best ports to use are the ports on the rear of the computer, front usb ports sometimes dont have as much power to drive external hard drives or high drain devices
first of all you should try it on deferent pc , if its ok then that leads us to insufficient power provided through usb ports , try using back usb ports not the ON-front, and if the problem still try using dual-usb cable like thishttp://www.cooldrives.com/usb-power-cable-mini-b.htmland if the external hdd doesn't work at all it might be the usb controller board inside the hdd cage needs to be changedif you cant find a similar one you may buy a new empty cage
It is possible that your hdd needs more power than the front usb ports provide. On some the front usb ports draw less power than those built directly on the back of the motherboard. Try plugging your hdd into a back usb port and I'd almost bet the problem disappears. I know this sounds weird but the same happened to me with a different device. All the research pointed to the back ports having the most stable power. Hope this helps.
Does the HDD spinup? My slightly educated guess... the Ext 2.5in HDD requires more power than it is getting from the single port.
1. Try another port 2. Try it on another computer (all USB ports do not provide 250ma to a load)You may be sharing this avail voltage with all plugged in devices and will have to pull 1-2 others to get the HDD online. Since STARTUP current is high, the HDD pulls all it can from the ports (logical) then settles down and uses 1/3 to keep spinning. After the HDD is up and online, try plugging the other USB devices back in, 1 at a time. If it stalls the HDD - you know the why 3. Take it back and find something a bit less power-hungry (Like Hitichi or Toshiba)
Some external USB drives require external power sources. Typically this is done either with an external power supply that connects to the drive or a second USB cable that connects to the drive and a second usb port on the pc. I have even seen one drive that comes with a Y cable. one end goes to the drive and the 2 usb plugs go to the pc.
Is the drive running when connecto to power ans PC? Try it on another PC. Check the power supply if it is operated from an external power supply. It it is self powered via the USB then this is a possible problem- the PC power supply cannot cope - Removing other USB devices may help here
