Maytag Performa agitates, but wont spin correctly. Sometimes it wont spin at all, other times it will spin, but doesn't spin fast enough to get all the water out. If it does spin fast the brake will engage on it's own and stop it. Clothes are wet at the end of the cycle. It does drain.

All washers have a safety switch on the on lid. There is usually a slot that a plastic pin goes into to activate the switch. These switches are high failure parts. The switch is located on the underside of the top deck. It should check 0 ohms when closed. You can also jump it but then it would NOT stop when the lid is open ie; during agitation or spin cycle ( a safety hazard).
I just encountered the same problem. I think the operation of the machine is such that the motor turns one direction for the spin cycle, and the other direction for the agitate cycle. I am replacing my motor, as I think i have a bad winding on the reverse. I will let you know.
Hate to say this, but if its not agitating, its probably a transmission problem. The transmission will lock up in spin mode. The Maytag's are pretty bad about this problem. Sorry to say, but probably pretty costly to replace the part as well. Good Luck!!! Jim
CHECK your stand pipe hasn't fell over (the one the drain hose goes to when emptying)If not,Either the pressure switch is broke or there is a hole or split in the pressure switch rubber hose. This switch stops the water when it reaches required level.
