There are several ways of converting your tapes to a digital format.
1. By routing it through a DV camcorder with AV-input (these are increasingly rare though. (using firewire).
2. By using a device like this, which converts to DV. (also connects via firewire). http://www.dv247.com/invt/23453
3. By using a device which captures to MPEG2.
The cheapest way is option 3, but it requires a working camcorder.
You should purchase a device similar to this:

If you don't have your camcorder anymore, or it isn't functioning, you should try to get a second-hand 8mm camcorder with firewire.
This way you are able to directly convert your tapes to your pc.
If you can't find a firewire camcorder you could just settle with a good functioning 8mm camcorder but you will have to buy a capture device as mentioned above.
