"Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready".

My Compaq N610c laptop is also giving the error "Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready".

I tried following things:
1. Replaced the hard disk of laptop with another hard disk of same laptop model. It booted up.
2. I replaced my hard drive in another laptop of same model. That laptop did not boot up.
3. Used windows xp boot up to boot up laptop. When i try to run recovery, it says hard drive is not present.

It means hard drive might have developed bad sectors or it might have crashed. That is mother boards of both the laptops are not able to detect it.
As of now, i would like to immediately recover the data and back them up. Let me know the procedure, software and hardware installed for back up.

I would also like to know possiblity to booting laptop with my current harddisk.

I dropped my laptop and when I turned it back on and it said the following, "non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready." I tried taking the hard drive out and replacing it back in and it did no good. I don't know what else to do.

If this error occurs you open the cabinet disconnected the harddisk data cable for few seconds and reconnected the harddisk data cable and bot it will work.

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, and then restart your computer:

  • Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.
  • Change your computer's boot sequence. To do this, you must change your computer's setup and the option that controls which device your computer uses to start from. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.
  • If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP) on the drive.

Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready

Hello Sir.

Please check that your cd or dvd drive does not contain any disks when attempting to boot.
This can sometimes cause boot problems. The other problem you may be experiencing is hard drive failure. This can be caused by the hard drive loosing its configuration from wear or failure. Perhaps you have an extra hard drive laying around you can test to see if you get same error.
Thanks And GOOD LUCK!

Turn it all the off. Then pull the hard drive out and put it back in again. Now, put your system disk (Win XP?) into the drive and turn the laptop on. It should do something else now. I have had this happen on several laptops I have rebuilt and it takes patience to get them started sometimes.... I have managed to load XP onto all of them eventually!

Hope this helps
