Possibly have a tape drive motor issue it powers down to save itself .Thats the dickens with those combo sets they are hard to look at ,you have to take it half apart just to see whats going on
The problem is with the vcr section, it is stuck in eject mode thinking there is a tape. This a mechanical problem that might be repairable. The tv and vcr share some of the same circuits, you can try resetting the tray in the out position as if it fully ejected the tape. Now if this does not work it means you have a gear timing problem or bad sensor.
You need a new VCR belt it located on right side of the vcr tray take your finger and start rotate the belt clockwise, it should release the tape. or the motor is going bad.
I had the same problem with mine turning off after 3-5 seconds. After much research I found a suggestion that on some combo units the vcr part could have a power supply cutout if it is not working correctly. I tried to insert a tape and found that the tape mechanism would not accept a tape. I used a little bit of force and managed to insert a tape. I then played the tape forwards and backwards and the power stayed on! I ejected the tape and found the TV then worked just fine. The power has now been on for over one hour. I hope this give you another avenue to try and fix your problem.
This is usually a sign that a function has not completed or a switch has stuck in an incorrect position. eject can only happen if the sensor (either optical or mechanical senses that a tape is present. The swich might be stuck or the sensor might be blocked or bad. You can open up the unit and try to determine if the sensors are not being blocked by any of the mechanical parts of the unit. You will need the service docs to show you where the components are located.
I hope this helps.

if all you want to do is disable the vcr portion turn the set on , install a blank vhs tape it has to be blank or the vcr will try to read it .and the tv and dvd should work fine. this is a timing problem in the vcr deck its not hard to fix but it is a pain.
