Dell 1720dn Error and Toner light on

I have seen this happen on a few different Dell 1720dn laser printers. What is the cause of this. During start up it goes through it's light sequence and will just default to a error light and a toner low light ( though toner was recently replaced and worked )

Any Ideas ?

We have two Dell 1720dn printers and both have this problem. The problem started right around the 1yr mark (when the warranties expired). The embedded device status web page says "31 Missing or Defective Cart."

error light remains in ON after the start up sequence. I tried to send a print out but nothing happened.

Have the same problem and using a Dell Toner and new drum still says toner is low and/or drum needs replaced. What to do now?

  • rrhone890 Jan 20, 2009

Using non Dell toner is to be avoided. Learned the hard way recently. RR

Our dell 1720 delays printing for 45-60 seconds for some reason. Its a network printer and other terminals are fine, just the one Dell desktop computer has a problem with this. Any ideas?

After replacing the drum unit you have to tell the printer that you've done it(it's not smart enough to figure it out itself). Have the front door open and press and hold the Cancel button on the printer until all lights flash in sequence then let go. Then close door and try.

It can be a bad chip on the toner cartridge. It can also be a drum that is way beyond it's life cycle. I tried the Dell 1700 reset procedure with no luck. I bought a new drum and it worked. After I reset the printer's counter by opening the door and holding the cancel button until all lights flashed in sequence I was able to put the old drum back in and it works fine.

If you're using 3rd party toner...buyer beware. We've had nothing but problems with 3rd party toner on Dell 1710n and 1720dn printers. Might try a different vendor.

My Dell 1720dn mono laser printer has not printed properly for some time - in fact it's dreadful! The letters and dark images have white vertical lines going through them, and some of the printing do

Change your toner cartridge. A properly working toner cartridge will never leave that much toner lying around. The white lines are an indication that either the toner is low, or the mag roller is defective.

Printer indicates toner and error light have replaced imaging drum and toner still lite

if the imaging drum has been replaced already, you may have to reset the counter for it. To reset its counter, press and hold the CANCEL button cancel_button_0.jpg until all lights flash in sequence, after that, you may need to turn off and turn on the printer and test it again..

1720dn Laser Printer: printer offline. unable to set online....

I Open my browser....I signed in to my router as administrator ....
Mine is 192.168.1.1 ....
I went to status in my router ....
Then to local network ....
Then to DHCP Clients Table ....
This is how I found what printer address the was.... Then I typed the printer ip address into my browser
Mine happened to be 192.168.1.105 ....
Yours will probably be different....That got me to the 1720dn printer menu ....I clicked on Configuration ....
I clicked on Print Server Settings
I clicked on TCP/IP
I clicked on Set static IP address.
I changed IP address from 192.168.1.105 To 192.168.1.125
and Submit....Now you can get to the printer menu at 192.168.1.125

Go to run....
Printers & Faxes
Right click on Dell laser printer 1720dn
Properties. Ports ....
Add port ....
Double click on Dell Enhanced TCP/IP ....
I named the port My dell laser 1720 dn....Where it said enter a single IP address or host name I entered the new address 192.168.1.125
the clicked OK ....

Right click on Dell laser printer 1720dn
Properties....Ports
Choose your new port ....

Even after changing new cartridge my print out has black ink stain on page left and right

This is usually due to a dirty imaging drum roller (green roller below toner). Remove the toner / drum assembly, then separate the two. Now slowly rotate the imaging drum roller by hand using the gear on the side of the cartridge (Try not to not touch the drum roller with your hand, as oils from your skin may cause further problems + toner is nasty) Look for toner splotches to the left and right on the drum roller as you turn it. If you see any you can clean them off with a damp paper towel. Then reassemble the printer and hold the continue button down until you hear the printer start then release it; this will print a test page.. Hopefully that will take care of the issue. Also while you got the assembly out of the printer you can clean the glass print-head lens using a clean, dry, and lint free cloth. The print head lense is located within the recessed area in the top of the printer.

- I have seen that happen to a bunch of those printers and that is usually all it is. Let me know if that takes care of it.

Dell 1720 flashinf replace drum- error.

I believe this message is occur because the laser printer drum needs to be replaced, not the toner cartridge.

These are two different things. The part is a DELL 310-8710 Drum Unit. Just google DELL 1720N drum and you should be able to find one.

Print error

Replacing the drum should fix this issue. The PC drum, aka, photoconductive drum, is light sensitive, if it has been exposed long enough to light, it can cause this problem.
