I had this exact problem, and the cycling would stop after about 30 sec. and then function properly. I believe a circuit was confused, mainly because I used an older battery and let it run out till the batt was dead - accidently - and when I put in a fresh batt, it no longer cycled and works perfectly to this day.
Now if I can get my computer to recognize the camera via firewire, I'd be golden.

This happens when flexible wire between LCD board and camcorder board got broken or cracked.
Camcorder needs that connecting flexible wire replacement, let me know exact model of Sony camcorder if you need part number of flexible wire.
