My laptop takes an age to boot up sometimes over 10 mins. I would like to wipe the hard drive and re install windows vista. The laptop came with vista pee installed so I do not have a boot disc. HELP,

You didn't say the make/model of your laptop so this answer may not work for your specific laptop but then there is nothing to lose in trying it. Usually if the laptop comes with pre-installed windows and you have never loaded it with anything else, there will be a factory image in a hidden partition on the system's hard drive. On powering up the laptop, usually while the manufacturer's logo is showing on the screen, you would press the Alt-key and hold it down while pressing the F10 key repeatedly. This should access the laptop's recovery or restore to factory image procedure. Wait for it to load completely and then follow the on-screen instructions to do the restore. Note that the restore will erase all user data from the hard drive including any malware or viruses that might be on it. Once restore is complete, you will have to re-enter your initial system configuration again such as the windows user ids and passwords. Also, if you were accessing wireless, you would need to reselect the SSID of the access point, and re-enter the WEP/WPA key if encryption is being used.

How do i reset the bios password for my lenovo a310?

User passwords:
Power on
BIOS execution can be controlled by a Power On Password. This password is set in the BIOS Configuration screen, accessed by pressing the F1 key after pressing the power on switch to turn on the PC. If the person at the keyboard does not know the Power On Password, then BIOS execution halts.

Hard drive
The hard drive is controlled by the Hard Drive Password. After the Power On Password is entered, the person at the keyboard must be able to enter the Hard Drive Password, otherwise the disk drive will not spin up for use. Like the Power On Password, the Hard Drive Password is set in the BIOS configuration screen.

Administrative passwords:
Each of the two user passwords can be controlled by a Master or administrative password. If the administrative password is not set, then anyone who knows the user password can change it in the BIOS configuration screen. If the administration password is set, then it is impossible to reset the user password unless you know the administrative password. The Supervisor Password is the administrative password for the Power On Password. The Master Hard Drive Password controls the Hard Drive Password.

Password Recovery is a feature of Client Security Solution 6.0. This makes it possible for an end user to recover from the problem of "I forgot my Power On Password or Hard Drive Password."

Simpletech external hard drive is showing as write-protected disk

Usually a protected hard drive has been in a laptop and the hard drive password is setup from the laptop's BIOS configuration. This password is embedded on the hard drive's chip.
This password protects the data from unauthorized access and must be removed before reuse in another laptop or as an external hard drive.
There are no backdoor passwords available and needs to be removed using that laptop's BIOS configuration, you need to know the password to enable you remove the password peotection.

Windows vista will not boot on a toshiba laptop

First try boot options.

On start up press F8, you get different boot options listed.

Select "last known good configuration"
If this doesn't work, try "boot into Safe Mode". Then restart once safe mode loads.

If neither of these work, you may have to attempt a "repair" of windows.

Get a Windows Vista Operating system disk (same version of Vista, Home or Premium).

1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

5. The Windows Setup CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.
