I push the on switch and nothing happens except for the power light (red) going off instead of turning green like it should when the unit comes on. I have unplugged the transformer waited, and replugged it in - this gives me the red power light back but can't get it to turn on or eject the disc currently in it. Do I need a new transformer? Happened after a lightning storm so it may have experienced a minor surge though it is on a surge protector with other devices including the TV that still work ok.

It is unlikely to be the switch itself. Check that the memory is seated correctly on the motherboard, as it won't boot without it. Otherwise it sounds like the motherboard itself is shot. Sorry for the
yeah, should stay red when unit is turned off, indicating there's power but it's doing nothing.
Per user manual:
Solid red - power off (standby mode)
blinking red - power off (now cooling)
blinking green - power on (preparing to light lamp)
solid green - power on
Most likely your laptop is going into sleep mode. Lots of them do not like sleep mode if nothing happens when you push the power button try to hold it down for about 5 sec. your computer should power off and then you can start as normal. If this problem persists change the options in your control panel to turn sleep mode off. That should solve it.
Find and replace the following caps, Ec18, 19, 20 / 1000uf/16v, Ec9, 10 / 1000uf/35v, Ec14, 25 / 470uf/35v should resolve the problem. You can get the caps at almost any electronics supply.
This is a common problem in this unit.

The only solution at this point would be to get the power supply repair since new boards are not longer being manufactured. In about 95% of the time if the LCD doesn't power up or turns OFF by itself or need to be unplug for some time to make work again; those are the symptoms of a dying or defective power supply. I service these power supplies, for more info write to [email protected]
Mine did that and it really pised me of, sony told me to turn the power switch onthe back of the console on, when the stand by light comes on to push and hold the on button for at least 3 seconds until you hear a second set of beeps. This however didn`t work so I sent it back to Sony Australia and got it fixed up no worries.
Either the new power supply you purchased is not functioning correctly. But, assuming it is now that you are getting some form of power to your PC, it is very likely the motherboard. Whatever fried your old power supply (or it could have just been the power supply itself) most likely fried your motherboard in the process. Probably not the CPU since the MB can't even post.
