Most likely your right but you can use the diagnostic test tool which is free from HP. This is the second one I have had and the first one was the print head burned out, however the guy was using after market ink and thats what caused it to short out the head. heres the site thats for free.

Call the engineer. He/She will probably recommend that it is most cost-efficient to replace the printer, and responsibly recycle the old printer.
