The Control Lock is actually a safety feature that enables the consumer to lock the control panel to prevent small children from manipulating the controls and accidentally starting the appliance. This can usually be reset and does not require a technician.
With the lock on, the control panel is disabled and you cannot use any of the controls, except the button to unlock it. It can inadvertently be set following a power outage, leaning against the control panel, or pressing and holding the wrong button. This is usually not an indication of a malfunction.

This is a common issue with washer however;
your whirlpool duet washer needs a reset to resolve the control lock problem.
Press and hold the DRAIN/SPIN button for 15 seconds to reset
the control. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.
Put clothes in washer like always and pushed control button to start the cycle. No lights appeared on for any cycle or the digital timer window. The only light that remains on is the "controls locked" in the verticle status row leds on the left side of control panel. The door was closed. I unplugged and re-plugged the machine for possible reset and there is no change.
The Control Lock is unintentionally turned on. Press and hold
the End of Cycle button until the
Control Locked indicator turns off. Unplug the machine for
at least 30 minutes to forcibly reset the control if the End of Cycle
button does not unlock it. Replace the control if unplugging and the End
of Cycle button fails to unlock it. The control can be locked by pressing and holding the same button until the Control Lock light turns on.
Unplug the unit for 5 minutes to reset the control. if the control continues to remain locked, this will confirm board failuer and, you will need to replace this control board.
