Toro Lawn Mower won't start, doesn't prime using the priming push

Hello, I have an older Toro Lawn Mower that I got from a friend, the model number tag is missing. It looks similar to the one in the picture, but it is red. I went to use it the other day and it wouldn't start. I saw the fuel line was really bad, one thing led to another and I ended up removing the carb and manifold assembly. I replaced the fuel line, put new gaskets, cleaned out the carb and reinstalled everything. It seems like it is not getting fuel. When I prime it the rubber primer button seems really week, I keep pumping it and it never feels like it pressurizes. If I spray starter fluid down the intake it starts then immediately dies. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rob

SOURCE: engine will not stay running

Hi

When the engine stops check the spark at the spark plug.Check compression(remove the spark plug and ground the plug wire on the engine, seal the plug hole with your thumb.Operate the starter. If the compression preasure blows your thumb off the hole, the compression is adequate for the engine to run.Now priming the engine(put some gas into the spark plug hole, back the spark plug and try to start the engine.Let me know. savumihai71 regards

The engine is starving for fuel, that is why it will keep running while you force the fuel to the engine with the primer button. At this point, the carb will have to be removed, disassembled and cleaned. I'm sure you will find blockage and dirt in the carb and also in the small orifices for air and fuel flow.

SOURCE: toro model number 200065 won't start. New gas,

some toro primer bulbs don't fill up with fuel but blow air into a chamber in the carb that has fuel in it so when you press the bulb, the air sprays fuel into the carb ( just a little) So since it won't start, the bulb probably has a very small crack in it. replace it and then try it.

The carburetor may need to be serviced. You need to find a parts shop that handles Tecumseh parts. You will most likely need a rebuild kit for the carburetor. The carburetor part number is 640303. The rebuild kit is 632809. The Tecumseh engine company shut its' doors 3 years ago. Finding parts is becoming harder and harder. I've heard that someone has bought Tecumseh over the winter but it is unknown when the new parts will hit the market. Best of luck to you.

My lawn mower starts fine after i prime it but then shuts off aer 10 seconds

Sounds like it's starved for fuel. Usually this can be fixed by cleaning the carburetor and/or installing a carb kit. What are the model and type numbers stamped on the engine?

Mower won't start. Toro mower..engine won't turn over. Cleaned sparkplug...checked air filter..weather cool. Followed instructions for cold engine...prime witrh three pushes of the bulb..wnon't even hint...

Something everyone over looks is oil. Did you check the oil? You seemed to mention everything else but. If you have a low oil switch with low oil it will not start

Totr model #20479 GTS 5 motor, when you push prime

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Toro recycler will run until primed gas is consumed.

The problem is that the gas that sat in the carb all winter glazed it over and gummed it up. Begin by going to any auto parts store, like an aiutozone, and getting a bottle of carb. cleaner. Seafoam is one I use. Add it to your gas, one ounce per gallon of gas. Also, pick up a can of engine starting spray.

Remove the air filter and spray the engine starting spray into the air intake. Pull start the engine and give it additional squirts of engine starting spray until it runs smoothly.
