Our dog chewed through the thermostat wire, which we have fixed. however, now the a/c comes on but the compressor isn't kicking on. is there some way this could be related, like something else might have been pulled loose by the cord being messed with?

There
are some risks, but they are very minimal.
Some of these risks include:
contamination, irritation to your dogs digestion, and possible choking. These risks should by no means be ignored;
however I suggest weighing the risks and benefits first. I would recommend being around your dog while
chewing rawhide to ensure his/her safety.
First determine if the compressor is kicking on and off. Normally you can get it to kick on by just changing the thermostat setting. If the compressor isn't kicking on then it could be the relay or the compressor.
NOTE: If you transported the unit in other than in a standing position, you should let it stand unplugged for several hours to let all the air bubbles to work themselves out.
if the inside unit is running but the outside unit isn't - I would check the fuses or breaker. I suspect you have a blown fuse or a tripped breaker.
What is also possible is that the 'low voltage' thermostat wire (coming from the thermostat inside the house) has been cut - possibly by a lawn mower or weed eater - or chewed into by a dog.
If this is the case - you easily splice (with all power off) the wires back together using the color of the individual wires.
Either you have blown the low voltage fuse located inside the air handler (if there is one) or you have blown the transformer feeding the low voltage control wiring.
If the transformer is blown due to no fuse installed, I would recommend installing a low voltage 3A fuse in line with the red terminal coming off the transformer. This will protect the transformer in the future.
HI there well i think what you dog chewed on was the thermostat wires. if you tell me the colors maybe i can help you out. [email protected] This is my e-mail
CHECK FREON LEVEL...IF GOOD CHECK FOR DISCONNECTED THERMOSTAT OR COMPRESSOR OR CONTACTOR WIRE AT OUTDOOR UNIT WITH POWER OFF. CHECK FOR A BLOWN CAPACITOR OR UNIT GROUNDED OR BURNT WIRE. BAD BREAKER OR SEE IF OUTDOOR FAN COMES ON AND COMPRESSOR KICKS IN ( MAKES WHIRRING NOISE ) .
INSIDE CHECK BOARD FOR BLOWED FUSE, GROUNDED WIRE, MAKE SURE SYSTEM IS GETTING 24 VOLTS, IF NOT CHECK THERMOSTAT WIRES OR TRANSFORMER ON INDOOR UNIT.. IF YOU SET THERMOSTAT TO OFF AND ON AND THE INDOOR FAN COMES ON..YOUR GETTING 24 VOLTS.NOW YOU NARROWED TO THE BOARD OR LOOSE WIRE, FUSE OR THERMOSTAT. IF YOU TURN YOUR UNIT ON COOL AND AUTO AND THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR FANS COME ON AND THE COMPRESSOR KICKS IN BUT IS NOT COOLING...CHECK AND POSSIBLY ADD FREON... ALSO CHECK AND MAKE SURE INDOOR BREAKER IS ON.
Hi, If you have what is called a heat pump, the outdoor unit is supposed to run. It has a reversing valve which reverses the flow of refrigerant and the indoor unit becomes the condenser and the outdoor becomes the evaporator coil. Now, if you don't have a heat pump and the furnace is gas fired, then the control wiring or thermostat is calling for both to come on. Control wiring has to be touching together somewhere and bringing on both. Look over the exposed stat wire outside if you have a dog that may have chewed the wires, I have seen this happen. If all wiring looks good, then the stat is faulty and must be replaced. Make sure you don't have a heat pump first, as the fan, compressor, and all will run on heat and cooling. I hope this will solve you're problem, please let me know, I would like to hear back. Sincerely, Shastalaker7
when the dog chewed on the wires were there any bare spots where the wires could touch one another, if so the transformer is is probably bad or if there's a fuse in the 24 volt line then it is bad.
That wire is to your thermostat which of course turns the A/C on/off. One thing you can do is to splice the wire back together w/ small wire nuts (available at hardware store or wal-mart, and just hook it up color to color and then tape w/ electrical tape. Make sure you turn your breaker off and turn off the thermostat control.
