The needle dropped into the internal mechanism? If you can see and access the needle, use a a pair of tweezers or needlenose pliers to grab it. If you can't see the needle, open the access doors. Then turn the machine upside down and gently shake it. See if the needle drops out.

I'm having the same problem. My sister gave me her Singer Professional XL-1 but she lost the manual. I can't find a free manual online.

Have a look at this website, in addition to having a threading page where you might find your machine listed they may also have a copy of a manual. Access to the threading page is free but if you want a manual it will cost(very little is free these days)
