Assuming that you have hot water at other faucets the problem could be a varnish buildup in the cartridge. After shutting off the hot and cold water either by turning off the main or at the faucet stops (if equipped), remove the cartridge and soak it in white vinegar to break up the varnish. You can clean it up with an old toothbrush and make sure that it is working. It should rattle when you shake it. new cartridges are not very expensive so you can just buy a replacement at any home center as well. If you are the original owner of the faucet Moen will send you a free replacement cartridge if you call them.

I have the same problem with a Moentrol (pull and turn left or right) shower valve. Our high-end Moentrol (a new name for the stand 122B cartdridge) is a year old. Had a plastic cartdridge. Replaced it with an OEM brass Moen 1225B cartdridge, and still have the same problem. I have a little more flow, but as debbenu explained, When I turn the lever handle to fuller on Hot, I get nothing, but a small (jump around to get wet, hit your head on the shower head) trickle.

The 1225B cartridge needs to be spun i80-degrees if your hot water is coming out of the cold side. There are no up or downs indicarted on the cartridge. Trun the water supply off. Pull the handle to let all the trapped water escape. Remove the brass clip in front of the cartridge. Use a Moen cartridge puller to remove the cartridge. Trun the cartridge 180-degrees. Re-install the cartridge and brass clip. Turn the water on and send me a check for $150., or do something nice for somebody else.

SOURCE: The faucet I am having trouble with is a single

This needs a new cartridge and may only cost you a couple of bucks at your local plumbing store. If you do this yourself, just make sure you turn off the water to both the cold and the hot and you will probably just need a allen wrench, screw driver and maybe a cresent wrench.

My kitchen does not have hot water

Does it run cold? Or not run at all? If cold and bathroom hot, it's piping problem. If doesn't run, valve closed. If no hot water anywhere but runs cold, water heater problem. If gas, fire out.

The hot and cold are reversed on our single handle shower (no tub faucet -- shower only)

Hot on left.
Cold on right.
Some single handle faucets have bleed-over where both hot and cold enter mixing valve each time handle is turned on, even when faucet calls for just cold or just hot.
Otherwise maybe a do-it-yourself plumber got pipes backwards... or maybe the tub used to be on other side of wall, and tub was moved during remodeling but pipes were not changed.

To fix problem:
First of all, turn off shower faucet. Turn on Hot at sink and put ear against shower faucet listening for sound of water flowing through the mixing valve.
If mixing valve is working fine, you need to open wall and investigate more.
For example if you have access door, reach in and feel which pipe is hot.
Pipes might need to be reversed if problem comes up in home inspection, otherwise the problem will not harm anything.

Getting hot water when shower valve is first opened.

If I understand correctly, you have single handled shower faucet.
Normally there is a wait for hot water to arrive at faucet.
But now hot water is already at shower faucet.

Single handled faucets have a mixing area inside valve where hot and cold come together before going into sink.
This mixing valve can have crossover where the hot and cold can pass through to each other even when faucet handle is off. When single handle faucets get old, this can happen.
How it happens:
For example another faucet is turned on inside house, and pressure differential between hot and cold causes hot water at shower handle to pass through mixing area and into cold water line.
So if another faucet has been run, then that lets hot flow to faulty single handled shower faucet.
To confirm this is the problem: turn on other faucet and put ear against shower faucet to listen for moving water.
This condition may also signal there is a water leak.
The problem is not harmful, but will draw cold water into water heater each time, and is energy wasteful.
Replace faucet or have plumber repair problem.

Get hot water only....when rotated to cold get nothing....replaced cartridge but still the same.....shower has been unused since house was built

If you don't have easy access to hot and cold line, where you can disconnect and check for flow to faucet, You can try turning off incoming water supply, remove cartridge, and shut off hot outgoing at water heater, then slowly open incoming (cold) water supply only and see if cold flows from faucet with cartridge removed. At least that will confirm flow faucet, then go from there.

Hot and cold water trickles from faucet--seems nearly clogged.

The debre from turning off the valves comes through the lines and clogs up,usually the aireator, the screen at the end of the faucet. Take aireator off ,,colena and reassemble. If that does not work, disconnect the  lines at the shurtoff agaoun and look for hte obstructions for the aireator back to the shurtoffs.
